GDT 8/8 BRAVES vs. BREWERS

Nick the stick with a big fly (7 on the year... power surge!) to put the Braves ahead 1-0. Whalen looked great in the first with 2 K's.

Anybody feeling better about Whalen so far tonight?

Seems to have better stuff as well as command.

I was fine with Whalen after the first inning last start. I think he just had some nerves. I think he's going to surprise some people. I think his stuff is very underrated. That changeup looks nasty at times.

I really don't like the angle of the CF Camera in Milwaukee. A lot harder to tell where the pitch is.

You don't compile a 2.45 ERA, WHIP of 1.115, K/BB ratio of 2.67 in the minors without having at least decent stuff. Understandably, he had serious jitters in his first major league inning, but I think he could settle in and become a solid #4 starter in the majors.

This is my first look at Whalen. The velocity is down a bit from what I was expecting, but he's been able to keep them off balance so far. Really hoping to see him take advantage of this opportunity the next couple of months.

His velocity wasn't much last time either. If he has great control and consistent downward movement he can get away with that.

I tend to agree. I do see value in minor league numbers as an indication of what you might expect out of a player.

His stuff is not great, so I don't expect him to be a top of the rotation starter, but plenty of guys have had nice careers, some of them more than nice, without having a whole lot of electric stuff. Whalen's track record of not walking a lot of guys and not being all that hittable in the minors makes me think he has a chance to stay ahead of hitters in the majors.

One inning or one start isn't really a sample size. Even for someone watching his baseline stuff. Would want to see more than a few outings before deciding where he locates and what his secondary pitchers look like when he settles in.

That pitch that looks like a change up (to me) is coming up as a slider on MLB at bat. Looks like a fantastic pitch so far . . . almost like a Medlen change up.

He will not succeed long term at 88-90 MPH. Without Lucroy the Brewers are probably worse offensively than the Braves, so this isn't exactly a huge test.

And why in the world isn't Jace in the lineup with a RHer in the mound?

Yah that mid to upper 70s changeup has been devastating so far. Medlen wasn't very heralded either but just kept dominating the minors until he finally got his shot. Medlen's FB velocity was a bit higher.

Not sure why Jace isn't in there... kinda weird.
