ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun took hostages and opened fire inside a crowded Florida nightclub, killing approximately 20 people and wounding 42 others before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers, police said Sunday.

Of Course It's the Guns. It's Always the Guns.

We know, right? We know that, at the end of the discussion, after we've talked about racism and hatred and mental illness, what remains are the guns. No, you won't get rid of racism and homophobia and hatred and mental illness by taking the guns away, but nothing will ever get rid of that. Those aren't tangible things. Ideas can't be taken out of someone's hands, alive and warm or cold and dead, melted down, and eliminated.

But guns can be.

Guns amplify the racism and homophobia, foster hatred, and give an easy outlet to the mentally ill. The sad part is that we know this. We know it to be true. Even the vast majority of people who cling to the belief that only guns can stop guns understand the equation. Easy access to guns means more murder.

But we are so afraid. Politicians are afraid of the NRA. Gun owners are afraid of government power. Everyone is told to be afraid of their neighbors, the black guy walking down the street, the Muslims in front of a mosque. And that fear has made us hold to our guns, if not in actuality then in support of mild laws and compromising politicians.

Yet reality demonstrates again and again that, mostly, the fear is over nothing, over a lie. There's never a good guy with a gun around when you need one. And, no, more guns won't solve that.

This post is absent of facts. It's absent of links. It's absent of stated context, although you know what the reference points are. They have become a mantra of places: Charleston, Newtown, Aurora, Orlando, and many more already part of the chant and many more to be added.

This blogger has grown weary of the depraved ignorance that has taken the place of rational discussion. He's long been amazed at how people who are wary of the motives of the government they elected don't have any suspicions of the organizations and corporations who only answer to the dollar. Very little surprises him anymore, not even this latest massacre.

It is who we are. It is a price to pay for freedom, we are told. And yet, somehow, we are less and less free.

Would appreciate if a moderator could rename this thread to a more appropriate title, seeing as it is the worst mass shooting in US history.

To spin this shooting as "it's the gun's fault" is the most absurd and disrespectful thing I've seen from 57 yet.

"Of course it's the guns"

go **** yourself

I would ask that the Mods leave it as is.

Reason is people take this sort of thing for granted. There is outrage today but , for example, in the same breath posters mock and taunt the only POTUS candidate talking about the subject.

Agree or disagree with her dolutions.

Sturg, it was an assault weapon someone made a profit off of.

let me add. I have been railing for over 5 years about the proliferation of weapons for profit. Here is one more instance of people's disconnect with the reality.

So you - like always... will never focus on the asshole who pulled the trigger.

You want to go after a manufacturer.

So for the people who smoke cigarettes? Blame the tobacco companies. Alcoholics? Blame the alcohol companies? Drunk driving? Ooooh, that's a tough one. Do we blame the alcohol companies or the auto manufacturers? The fact that more people are killed with hammers than guns? I guess go after the hammer makers. Knives? Go after the knives makers!

You see how stupid you sound? None of your posts talk about the killer himself. The fact that he may have been anti-gay... or pro radical islam... or simply insane.

Nope, it's the gun's fault!

Go **** yourself

Like I said. Yesterday it was mental illness or video games or the family. Today it is radical Islam, which has yet to be verified.

But one common denominator in ALL of these shootings. I would think at some point people well versed in analytical baseball stats would see the obvios

If your point that the common demoninator in shootings is that someone was shot... then congratulations on making a really dumb point.

If you'd like to discuss the common demoninators on murders... well you don't want to do that because it doesn't fit your bull **** agenda.

So if we can just get rid of the guns or at least stop them from getting into bad guys' hands so easily, all will be good. We won't have to worry about terrorists or homophobes or deranged people because they can't hurt us. That will all go away and you won't have to bother rushing to make a message board post about it.

57, woke up today with a smile on his face. He got to make a (in my opinion, accurate) political opinion on a message board where no change actually occurs but he can smugly tell everyone he's been right for five years.

If you want to make a difference 57, then go to a blood bank today. Otherwise, shut up.

I think you speak for most of us. Or at least I hope you do.

this is simply wrong, juvenile, appeal to emotion, dogmatic, propaganda nonsense.

Yu never answered my question before about why you don't promote an amendment to repeal the 2nd??? because you know it's impossible. and if it's impossible why you promote the unconstitutional idea of circumventing the 2nd amendment???? I will tell you why, because you hate your own country. Liberalism is a disease. It is an infection of the mind just as evil, just as dogmatic and twisted as any religion. It turns rational people into extremists and weaklings.

anyone who would suggest ignoring the constitution for their own ends is an enemy of my country.

Norway has strict gun laws, what happened there when 76 people died? Or in paris at Bataclan? France a haven for gun rights?

I'm not usually one to defend 57 and really am not here, but you are very dogmatic in your critique of his dogma. Methinks you might benefit from a bit of self-reflection.

same weapon used at Sandy Hook and Aurora and the Planned Parenthood attack
Pattern ?

Neither Norway or France have the epidemic of mass shootings/murders we suffer

2nd Amendment is not going anywhere.

It is legal to buy Percoset or Oxycondin or Sutafed.
With prescription.
I am sure we can protect the constitution and regulate the sales and manufacture of AR-15's

As stted in the blog post above , there will always be the asshole Sturg points out.
I just read where the shooter's father said the shooter was upset because he saw a gay kiss. The shooters is reported to have a violent temper and prone to domestic vioence.

Someone made a buck off of selling this guy this weapon and creating this misery
Personally I am tired of the same old story.
With one common thread
