Insane package for Chapman

The Yankees just got Torres and McKinney plus more from the Cubs for a few months of Chapman. That's a top 25 guy and a top 75 guy plus 2 more parts for 2 months of a reliever.

That's insane. That's the kind of package I figured was realistic for Julio, and the yanks somehow got it for a rental BP arm?

what in the world?

That's silliness, but hey the Cubs are going for it, win the WS with Chapman playing a pivotal role and nobody is really going to care about a 19 year old SS.

As I said in the other thread, you have to look at it from the Cubs' perspective. TWO playoff series victories since 1908. 108 years without a championship. Their bullpen is their weak link. Getting Chapman gives them the best chance at success in October. It's a big overpay in theory, but they still have a good system and a lot of cheap, controllable talent at the big-league level and the resources to sign Chapman long-term.

Some teams are willing to give that up anyway. Maybe the Braves front office should do better, Idk.

Whoa! Let's not forget the five seasons of sub-.500 baseball (including one 100-loss season) that the Cubs experienced before their rebound. Cubs built up resources during those years for the moves they have been making to round out the big league team.

Wow...that is a lot....guys that are far away but talented....

If that is what you get for Chapman then I'd be all about trading Miller. Yanks could always turn around and buy Chapman back.

No, what I'm saying is the original poster said he'd thought that's what we could get for Julio. Maybe we could or maybe Julio just isn't as important to teams as Chapman is to the Cubs when you consider he's kind of the final piece and you consider their situation.

Gotcha. Sorry for the overreaction.

Yep, and neither Torres nor McKinney would be likely to see the field with the Cubs current players now anyway. The Cubs optimum window for winning with Arrieta and Lester is this year and next, so it makes sense to go for it.

Now, if someone as dumb as Oakland was two years ago wants to give us some guys like Addison Russell for Teheran and we all of a sudden get deep pockets soon, then I'll swallow another couple bad years like the Cubs had.

I think this is part of it.

It's not just talent, it's ready talent.

Cubs are giving up a ton but it's FAR away. Braves want guys that can play next year. AA or AA guys that we know more about. That is tough. Tough to give up a guy like Russell and then see him starting next year.

Simply what the cost is. This is where "the rubber meets the road" and we find out who considers themselves LEGITIMATE contenders. The Gnats are going to have to pay through the nose if they want Wade Davis now. Same for the Dodgers if they want Teheran or similar-level SPs. Everyone else now has to take a step back and wonder if they actually think they can beat the Cubs in a short series now.

McKinney wouldnt play over what they have.

Same with Torres.

Cubs window is now with Arrieta a FA soon and Lester still pitching at a high level.

Giants could with Bumgarner/Cueto at the top.

Maybe Mets with their pitching.

But it's pretty much a 6 inning game now with some combo of Montgomery, Wood, Strop, etc in the 7th and Rondon/Chapman in the final 2 innings.

I think some around here would be mad if the Braves ever traded one of those highly regarded prospects.

If we were in the Cubs spot, a team set up to win it in the next 2 years, i'd be ok with it.

Gotta take risks, cant play it safe.

It's a good trade for the Cubs. Torres will be blocked by and is a few years away. Mckinney is a left fielder with no power or speed, who will be blocked by Schwarber. They're not going to feel the pain of losing either of those guys.

As a few have stated they have to strike now while they have Lester and Arrieta.

I understand the trade from the Cubs perspective, but players who are 'blocked' are not suddenly less valuable, if you have two corvettes - they aren't worth less because you can only drive one at a time.

It sure seems to me that the Cubs likely overpaid, but given their situation - I get it; the Yankees come out like bandits here.
