It’s time to hold America’s gunmakers accountable

About time this becomes part of the public discourse. Heard of this this morning on the radio and thankfully we get details tomorrow

"The time has come to recast this battle as a fight to hold those who make billions of dollars from the sale of firearms accountable for what their products do to individuals and communities. We must call for corporate responsibility, and enforce it by law if it’s not forthcoming. And President Obama, whose outrage about guns many of us share, must be willing to go well beyond what he has done so far. "

maybe you are right !

Until they show themselves capable of acting responsibly perhaps it is time to take away their toys as you would a 6 yer old child

In fact waht came out of the administration was nothing more than enforcing background checks already on the books.
Not near enough in my eyes.

And who is it that arbitrates who is and isn't responsible in the gun debate -- gun owners ?

Owning a gun is a privilege. I and many others find it totally irresponsible that gun owners are incapable of policing themselves or their sport or passion if you will

Just saw a number of 30. That is how many children under 5 lost their lives to guns in the past year
30.

People that legally purchase guns and pass background checks to carry their guns police themselves just fine. Probably better than actual police.

really?

"The vast majority of guns used in 15 recent mass shootings, including at least two of the guns used in the San Bernardino attack, were bought legally and with a federal background check. At least eight gunmen had criminal histories or documented mental health problems that did not prevent them from obtaining their weapons."

..........................................................

maybe it's just me but if I were a gun enthusiast I'd be looking at strengthening gun registrations and supporting stricter regulation of production and purchase to insure I would still have something to be enthusiastic about !
To insure I could consider myself a responsible gun owner

But hey, I'm just an old hippie crackpot

You didn't read what I wrote.

I read it perfectly well and quoted you directly.

Of course the majority do. The majority of kids outside a school look before crossing the street. WE as a society have to drive extra slow in school zones because there are always those that don't and the consequences could be horrific.

Same here. I am sure the majority are responsible.
Above are 15 that weren't.
So no, "People that ... " in totality is a false statement

not at all.

I care about husband wife passion shootings or store robbery shootings or gun suicides etc etc
Pick one.

Gun violence is gun violence.
There is one common thread running through them all --

“Our unalienable right to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness, those rights were stripped from college kids in Blacksburg and Santa Barbara and from high schoolers at Columbine and from first graders in Newtown.

"First graders." -- President Obama

Since at least 1950, all but two public mass shootings in America have taken place where general citizens are banned from carrying guns.

Mass killers have even explicitly talked about their desire to attack gun-free zones. The Charleston, S.C., church shooting in June was instead almost a college shooting. But that killer changed his plans after realizing that the College of Charleston had armed guards.

James Holmes, the movie theater killer, decided not to attack an airport because of what he described in his diary as its ‘substantial security.’ Out of seven theaters showing the Batman movie premiere within 20 minutes of the suspect’s apartment, only one theater banned permitted concealed handguns. That’s the one he attacked.

Just for reference, the "mass shooting" in 2016 was a house party fight where no one was killed.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Republican Presidential candidates ripped President Obama on Tuesday for what they called his stubborn insistence on linking gun violence with guns.

In campaign stops across Iowa and New Hampshire, the G.O.P. hopefuls pounded the President for irrationally concluding that guns have played a role in the nation’s epidemic of mass shootings.

“How any reasonable person could look at gun violence and say that guns are involved is beyond me,” said Texas Senator Ted Cruz. “And yet, somehow, President Obama always finds a way.”

“I would very much like to have a conversation about gun violence, as President Obama has said he wants to have,” said Florida Senator Marco Rubio. “But as long as he keeps falling back on this tired, unproven connection between gun violence and guns, there’s just no point.”

The former Hewlett-Packard C.E.O. Carly Fiorina said that Obama’s persistent linking of gun violence with guns was “sad but not surprising, from a man who believes that people’s health can be improved by access to health care.”

“He isn’t thinking straight,” she said.

Of all the candidates, though, the retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson was perhaps the most scathing in his assessment of the President’s remarks. “Even if every gun in the world suddenly disappeared, there would still be gun violence,” he said.
