John Burkett to Begin Professional Bowling Career

Those of us old enough to remember 2000-2001 surely recall the frequent chatter about John Burkett's bowling prowess. Looks like he's beginning his professional bowling career in earnest. Bully for him.

His 2001 season remains one of my favorite "what the hell" player years in recent Braves' history. 219 1/3 IP, 147 ERA+, 7.7 K/9, an All Star appearance and 7th in the league in WAR among pitchers, all as a 36-year-old we had picked up in spring training of 2000 after the Devil Rays cut him.

I remember, earlier in his career, seeing a little blurb about his bowling in Sports Illustrated, featuring a picture of his setup on the mound alongside one of his bowling setup—he started both deliveries almost identically.

For the kids out there, Sports Illustrated was an early version of si.com, printed on pulped trees.

Nice PSA.

There's a lot of crossover between the sports. The Gov had a PBA card back in the late 80s-90s, sported a 215-220 back when that meant something.

Start both in an athletic position. Rhythm, timing, it's all in there.

It's like baseball ... with beer.

And The Jesus.
