These kinds of situations are tricky. You don't want to exempt politicians from legal scrutiny. But you also want to avoid politicizing law enforcement. The DoJ has evolved procedures over the years that struggle to strike the right balance. Those procedures and norms will never be perfect, but they are important to protect against political interference. And the media obviously has a role in scrutinizing actions such as this one for any signs of political taint.
