PITCHER OF THE MONTH (AUGUST): Bryce Elder, a strapping right-hander (6-2, 225) and a former Texas Longhorn, was the Braves final pick of the abbreviated 2020 draft -- a 5th round pick they went a half-million over slot to sign. He's jumped two levels in his initial pro season, and has won five straight decisions. For August, he went 4-0, 3.00, with the first three wins coming at Mississippi and the last with Gwinnett.
Possessing a slider from hell, opponents hit .225 against him in August after a measly .140 in July (when he went 4-1). He struck put 31 against five walks in 24 innings and has set himself up to be an obvious non-roster camp invite next spring.
HITTER OF THE MONTH (AUGUST): Luke Waddell, the Braves' 5th round pick this year, has primarily been a shortstop but has also played second and third since signing. All the while, he has destroyed all scouting reports about his hitting limitations. In his 15 games since signing (all with Rome), he has hit six home runs -- all in the just-completed six-game series with Bowling Green , serving as DH for the last four. He ends the month with four homers in his last three games.
The captain of this year's Georgia Tech squad, he's more Albies that Riley, measuring a stout 5-9, 180.
