Nelson Mandela Has Died

Karen Finney ‏@finneyk 9m

Who among us would have the grace to invite our former jailers to your inauguration as Mandela did?

"I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles."

RIP to a great man. He will be missed

"Nelson Mandela did a lot of good work, don't get me wrong. But I think I'm on track to do something even bigger. I liberate minds with my music. That's more important than liberating a few people from apartheid or whatever.

"Not to say Mandela wasn't for real. I have mad respect. I just think we need to keep things in perspective here. Anyone can be replaced. And I think I'm well on my way towards being the next great black leader. I'm already worshiped around the world. And there's more to come."

Guess who said it.

Why does Mandela get such a pass from starting an organization that ended up killing over 100 innocent people? He founded a 'terrorist' organization for gods sake.

I was wondering when this was coming. Congrats, I guess.

Fighting for self-government in the American colonies in the 18th century? Heroic patriotism.

Forming a militant resistance to a government that disenfranchised, degraded, and dehumanized people based on race during the latter half of the 20th century? Terrorism.

He's too preachy, but not a bad read. No one is perfect, and no one should be viewed as a god.

Apartheid flies in the face of the Christian understanding of the equality of every single human being. Our true human equality is not based in a political promise, it is biblically and theologically grounded—unquestionably grounded in the fact that the Bible clearly reveals that every single human being is equally made in God’s image. We are separate and distinct from other creatures precisely because we alone as a species—as human beings, as Homo sapiens—we alone bear God’s image. And we bear God’s image equally, male and female, regardless of any racial or ethnic consideration; and for that matter—as in these days we must argue over and over again—regardless of any other kind of consideration, including age or process of development.

Yeah, that was funny. I'm glad he believes all men and women are equal, but in the past, people have used christianity as an argument for slavery.

Well he is a preacher (President of a Seminary). What do you expect? :-)

Spot on read. Doesn't gloss over the bad or the questionable. Doesn't resort to hagiography. But, he also doesn't do the typical bash. Underscores the good even the historical necessity.

Sure they have. Doesn't mean they were right.
