It was announced on Thursday that former Braves catcher and defenisve whiz Chris Stewart, 37, has announced his retirement. Last season, he caught 47 games in Gwinnett and was called up to fill in behind the plate for five games in Atlanta -- which was one of eight MLB uniforms he wore.
Another catcher, Lucas Herbert, has returned to organized baseball. Drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft -- one round after his high school teammate, Kolby Allard, Herbert caught 101 games for Rome in 2017 (hitting .243) and 67 for Florida last year (dropping to .202). Appreciated for his arm and defense, he still cut at the end of training camp and landed in the Frontier League for 2019, but was acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He made his Class AA debut on Thursday and had a double and triple in his first game.
