O'Flaherty And Venters

Don't know if EOF comes back next year, but man Kimbrel-Walden-Venters-O'Flaherty-Avilan-Carpenter-Ayala/Freddy as long man.

We're heading back to ATL right now if even one of them is healthy.

Yep.

I think you offer EOF 1 million guaranteed, may be with some incentives on innings pitched. Not sure of Venters will ever be what he once was, but you obviously non-tender him and see where he's at in April. Doubt he'll be even ready by the start of the season anyways.

For some reason I thought it was a shoulder surgery for venters instead of TJS. Anyways, I'm sure they'll non-tender Venters and both pitchers will probably still be jobless until Feb-March at the earliest.

I hope we bring them both back. Of course they won't be ready the first couple months of the season. I kind of like the idea though of having a couple guys coming in at mid-season like that. You don't have to make a deal for pen help at the deadline and they would be relatively fresh in the post-season.

My ideal pen for next October: Kimbrel, Walden, Carpenter, EOF, Avilan, Venters and Hale as the long man.

Why wouldnt we bring them back? I doubt either will be expensive coming off TJS, and we will have guys(Kimbrel, Walden, Avilan to name a few) that can carry the pen until those guys are ready. Its going to be an interesting offseason. Its fun though because this is a 96 win team and we can bring everybody back if we wanted, but lets see what happens.

Yes. It makes a lot of sense for both us and the players for them to come back. We can carry Wood as the second lefty in the pen until the two of them come back.

Wood should be considered as the second LH starter (sort of as a baby Avery with Minor as baby Glavine) after Maholm (baby Liebrandt) leaves for free agency. EOF could be re-signed, but they're not going to significantly overpay to bring him back either, since there are already other LH relievers, esp. with Venters returning.

Our plan for Wood should be this: Start 2014 in the pen as the second lefty alongside Avilan. Go back to AAA for seasoning/stretching out as a starter when one of EOF/Venters returns. Be our main reserve in the event one of our starters (Minor, Medlen, Teheran, Hudson, Beachy) goes down. I think the odds are well over 50% that Wood will be in the major league rotation at some point in the second half of 2014. The plan sketched above has the virtue of holding down his innings so he can be fresh and strong late in the season.

Woods has higher upside. He's better off starting to get innings at AAA (why rush?) than bullpen lefty. If EOF isn't brought back, they can always re-sign Downs for that type of role.

Venters will be back. He was too good when healthy not to bring back. Might cost 2 million but thats relatively small compared to the budget and there is no long term risk. O'Flaherty I worry some team like the Dodgers with a virtually unlimited budget will give him a big 1 year deal but usually pitches coming off TJ surgery get 1 year incentive laden deals. Its just a matter of whether he wants that to be with the Braves or another team. I think for a player that was worthless before coming to Atlanta that he will want his rebound season where he had all of his success so he can get a big deal next year.

Both had the surgery early enough that they should be ready around the end of spring training. Unlike starters they dont need to stretch their arms out to pitch 6+ innings at one time. If Beachy was coming back as a reliever he would have been back sooner.

I doubt Beachy makes the opening day rotation so imo, Wood starts the yr in the rotation. Beachy probably get the Medlen treatment considering how much time he's missed. Bring him along in the pen and let him start in the 2nd half.

I don't want either back tbh. Braves missed the boat in not selling high on Venters before his injury and EOF will be expensive and expendable. Avilan is the new EOF
