I know we all have different ideas of who we should go after so I would like to list players we individually think we should target. If it's a free agent maybe list how many years and money you would offer. If it's a non free agent you can list players you would use as part of a trade for them. I think this would be interesting to hold onto for future discussion.
Andrew Miller - we have a desperate need for an good lefty reliever. I would offer him 3 years 24 million. I would use him to set up Kimbrel for 2014 then trade one of the two after the 2015 season.
Drew Smly - I think he is a very underrated starter. I don't think the Rays would trade him but of they did Gattis would probably be part of the deal.
Henry Owens - I really like Owens. Unfortunately so do the Red Sox. I imagine it would take a Heyward or JUpton to make Owens available.
Mookie Betts - good OBP and defense from a player capable of playing cf and 2b is exactly what we need. From most accounts he is untouchable but you never know.
Garin Cecchini - good defensive 3b lacking power. His stock is down after a few down years but I liked him going back to the draft. Would love to take a chance on him.
Jackie Bradley Jr - wouldn't give up much for him but I am a suckered for elite defense. If we could get these 4 players for anyone we had I would drive them to Boston personally.
Rajai Davis - traditional leadoff type hitter who can only hit lefties. Would make an ideal platoon partner with a lefty. Not sure what would be a fair deal for him. A little expensive for his role and is a below average defender.
Jarrod Dyson - he is an elite defender in CF. He is a lefty hitter who needs a platoon partner. He is a traditional leadoff hitter. His .320 OBP is kind of low but makes the most of his time in base and could steal 60 with more playing time. Royals already have Cain who is a good defender in center. The Royals were last in home runs and I think Gattis will appeal to them a lot.
Wade Davis - his value is unique in that he has team options that are very expensive for a set up man. I can't see the Royals paying a setup man 7 million. We need to get the pen back to an elite level and we need some lefties to balance the pen. I am willing to overpay for a short term solution to the problem. He has 3 team options so there is no long term risk. I would hope to get both Dyson and Davis for Gattis and hopefully pawn Chris Johnson off on them since Moose Tacos can't hit lefties.
Joc Pedersen - he is the rare prospect who gets a lot of minor league seasoning despite succeeding. The Dodgers already have too many outfielders so I hope we could steal him. He is a good defender and I think will be a 20/20 hitter with a solid obp. He can even play center. Not sure if an NL team will value Gattis highly. With Hanley a free agent I could see Andrelton as a good fit. They also had serious bullpen problems so maybe they go after Kimbrel.
Alexander Gurrero - he can play 2b and LF. He is also blocked by Dee Gordon.
Yasmany Tomas - it's a high risk high reward situation. He isn't the big obp player we need but a 25-30 HR hitter with mediocre obp is still very valuable. The only outfielder we have signed beyond 2015 is the one we all want gone. The way I see it Tomas isn't that much worse than Justin but he won't cost 20 million a year plus we get back whatever Justin can bring in trade. If we could it would be nice to keep Justin and get all 3 in the lineup.
Nori Aoki - been on his bandwagon since last offseason. He does seem to be declining. He was having a down year before a big September and October. I think he will get 2 years 16 million which is more than i would offer. Might go 2 years 12 million of other options don't pan out.
Chase Headley - I think what he did with the yankees is his true talent level. I am also a suckered for elite defense we need OBP and Chase brings that. Rumored price is 4 years 50 million. I would do that.
Jake Peavy - not going to go thru the whole history but we have reason to believe he would want to pitch here. I think he will be good in the NL. I might go as high as 3 years 45 million if we could fit it in the budget. We really need a good replacement for Santana.
Ervin Santana - he is a free agent that I expected to get way too much. MLBTR estimated 4 years 56 million. I think that's fairly reasonable. Wouldn't be my first choice but if other things don't pan out I would sign him at that price.
Daniel Murphy - long shot for many reasons. Not sure how we match up for a trade. I know they need relievers but we can't spare any and Carpenter or Varvaro probably won't get the Mets too excited.
Arismendy Alcantara - I like his versatility and power/speed potential. He could play 3b, ss,2b, or cf for us. He is also a switch hitter which helps the lineup balance. The Cubs have a ton of infield prospects so he might be In play. I am worried some that he hit sub .200 after his first 54 at bats.
Neil Ramirez - if we trade for Alcantara it's likely to be a big deal involving Justin or Heywood and I would want more than 1 player in return. Ramirez had a breakout year in the pen and still has 6 years of team control so he will be cheap for 4 years(arb 1 is still cheap).
Arodys Vizcaino - really liked him as a prospect. He would be a small piece of a big trade but I would love to roll the dice on him getting/staying healthy. I think he could be a beast out of the pen.
Johnny Cueto - Heywood for Cueto has been speculated as a deal that could help both teams. Both are free agents after 2015. I like this idea but I would rather it be Justin. Heywood I think does legitimately want to stay here and I still hold on to the hope he will develop an MVP caliber bat. Cueto/Teheran/Wood/Minor is a playoff rotation that can go deep in the playoffs. I think we can find offense in left field easier than we can find an ace starter.
Dexter Fowler - switch hitting outfielder who can get on base. I'll take 3 please. Price shouldn't be high but who knows with the Astros. Dream scenario they take Chris Johnson as part of the deal. He was a decent player for them and their 3b situation last year was abysmal. They also have stated one goal this offseason is to improve their pen so they could have interest in Vavaro, Carpenter, or Walden.
Jeff Samardzjia - Beane loves him some trades. Most of his team was built thru trades. Samardzjia was aquire as an all in move for 2014. Now that that failed they might want to unload Samardzjia for longer term assets. The A's really started struggling when they traded Cespedes. Statistically he is really similar hitter to Gattis. Their DH situation was also bad and their backup catcher John Jason may not be able to catch anymore because of concussions. Our problem last year was offense but if we neglect the rotation improving the offense will just be a lateral move. Samardzjia would be an upgrade over Santana and give us a great rotation again.
Taijun Walker - formerly one of the top pitching prospects in the game. Hasn't transitioned smoothly to the majors. I would still bet on his upside. The Mariners desperately need someone like Gattis. Right handed power hitting DH.
Charlie Furbush - solid lefty reliever for Mariners could be small piece of a big trade.
Logan Morrison - I still believe he can be a quality player. Not sure how highly the Mariners view him.
Andrew Miller - we have a desperate need for an good lefty reliever. I would offer him 3 years 24 million. I would use him to set up Kimbrel for 2014 then trade one of the two after the 2015 season.
