Savannah the Outlier

Yeah, you just don't leave the major areas for tourism. This has always been the case for Savannah.

I have spent a ton of time there. It seems most move out to whitmarsh or the landings.

We had a cab driver take us to a really really bad neighborhood well south of where we were supposed to be one time and pretend the cab broke down in the middle of the road thinking we were too drunk to notice. Nice little set up he had working.

They have some drag shows you'd enjoy. The rooftop bar at the hotel indigo offers some nice views. Food is still a strong suit.

Used to be some odd ass SCAD people on the streets at night.

As I said I always enjoy my visits. It has a nice vibe and some great restaurants. I especially enjoyed Treylor Park and Mrs. Wilks. And the dive soul food place on the edge of town board leader took me. Hotel Indigo is excellent. I stayed there on my first visit. The Indigo is a great brand. Have stayed at Indigos in Atlanta, Jacksonville, San Diego and I believe Nashville. All excellent.

I've been a few times. Never felt unsafe. I haven't traveled to many US cities that I have felt unsafe in. Memphis and parts of Atlanta are probably the 2 cities I feel the most unsafe in.

Don't you live in/near NYC? I can't imagine Savannah is any worse.

Add NOLA in that group. And I love to visit all 3 (haha). Although I have taken Memphis out the rotation for the most part. Last time I went, there were 3 panhandlers for every guest on Beale street... sad fall for a once great city.

I've always felt safe in both NY and Savannah. Including parts of NY like the Bronx and Harlem. They offer variety in food, music and culture you can't find if you just stay in say the East Village. My wife was living in Harlem when I started dating her. I have fond memories of her neighborhood.

I've enjoyed my visits to Memphis. I was there during Elvis Week one year. His fan club is unbelievable. People coming from all over the world to celebrate together.

Sure - During the day in the less seedier areas. You wouldn't dare catch yourself living there or walking around along at night down non-trafficked streets.

BUt of course your living area is quite a level up than these areas being discussed.

I've spent plenty of time walking around Harlem at night. Both 25 years ago and more recently. Have never had a problem. I have a couple favorite restaurants there and will keep going.

My wife and I never left Manhattan on our 4 day trip pre-covid. Well technically we rode the tram to Roosevelt Island I guess. Probably the place we felt the least safe was the lower end of Central Park, really dirty and a lot of homeless.

Cleanliness is not NY's strong point. The recent move to receptacles for putting out the trash is an illustration of how behind it is on some thangs. As for the homeless, the pendulum swings back and forth. It seems to be swinging back toward emphasizing the need for order and minimum standards of behavior in public spaces. In NY and around the country.
