Saying good bye to Freddie

The difference between the Goldy contract and the upcoming Freeman extension is, the Braves will likely have the luxury of the DH for the entirety of Freeman's remaining years.

Honestly the possibility of the DH doesn't really do much for me regarding a Freeman nor should it be any other team really. He's a good 1B and I doubt he's ever going to be Ortiz bad out there where actually playing him will be a detriment to your defense. It's all about hitting. And I don't think being a DH some days would really save his bat so to speak. Much better hitting 1B than him have fallen hard in their 30's that have had the benefit of the DH.

It's going to be hard for AA to go more than 3 years when he knows how players like Freeman usually age. And it's going to be hard for Freeman to only accept a 3 year deal when he knows some team will likely give him the moon.

I honestly wonder though. We are in 2021 and we've had so many advancements in nutritional and exercise studies than even 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Is it possible that we are now at a time when athletes can continue to perform at a high level into their 30's? Obviously there are so many examples that say otherwise, and it really comes down to if that person is willing to be dedicated to what it takes to remain elite. I just wonder who the legit examples of players who have fallen hard in their 30's are, to compare with Freeman.

I think the increase in velocity works against older hitters.

Freddie isn't "barking" about anything. He's answering questions he's being asked by reporters.

Nobody wants to think about it. But if we were to drop out of contention, we'd actually have a whole bunch of coveted assets to flip at the deadline. Freeman, Morton, D'Arnaud should all bring back good value from contending teams. Even Chris Martin.

It would be an opportunity to recharge the system no doubt. And maybe put some coin in the coffers.

Not that I would wish that on the club or expect it to happen, but there are worse things.

The majority of even elite guys crest around 32 or so. PEDs are about the only thing that have really changed that.

If we do fall out of contention in a bad way, we are in a good position to be sellers at the deadline. d'Arnaud, Morton, and Smyly would likely net decent (not great) returns. But this is contingent on a worst-case scenario

Freddie isn't "barking" about anything. He's answering questions he's being asked by reporters.

Not yet, no. He knows better than anyone else how much AA likes to keep this stuff quiet though, and answering questions about it at all creates a distraction.

I don't think his answer the other day has created any problems, but he's said his peace AND said openly for everybody to hear that he doesn't want to talk during the season. Was that a mistake on his (or his' reps) part? Who knows? At the end of the day, answering anymore questions about it becomes "barking" - saying he doesn't want to talk right now is as clear as can be IMO.

Asked whether he had any level of concern about the absence of negotiations, Freeman said, “No concern. I don’t know if we could really even talk right now. That would be a distraction, and I don’t like distractions. My main focus is the game tonight, and I don’t think there’s going to be much talking going on anytime soon.”

There's no reason to answer anymore questions on either side - Freddie doesn't want to talk right now, and AA doesn't talk about this stuff publicly. Case closed, stop asking the question. Answering it again may not cause nearly as much of a distraction for Freddie as it does for everyone else in the clubhouse. They were actually already talking about it on MLB Central this morning - DeRo even pointing out that Acuna and Albies will be watching how Freddie's treated closely.

They asked a question and he answered in the typical fashion that players do. You're reading too much into this. Freddie can't control what questions he is asked and reporters aren't going to stop asking because that's their job.

Do we think anyone is likely to get a call up when the service time period passes? I'm not sure if they think Contreras is ready. Waters probably not.

I'm not reading anything into anything - I said clearly that "I don't think his answer created any problems". You quoted it.

The point remains that these things always seem to get ugly at some point, much more ugly when the sides talk to the press about them. The best thing Freddie can do - for BOTH sides - is simply tell reporters he's already said all he has to say the next time the question comes up. Don't get sucked into trying to clarify what he's already said, be pleasant while letting them do their jobs and just move on to the next question without giving them anything to write about.

I still think they're going to want to see Waters get a good bit of game action before even considering him, so I think you're probably right there. If d'Arnaud is going to keep playing 75% or more of the games it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to bring Contreras up either.

I could see De La Cruz being called up at some point to be used in the pen, but he's already on the 40-Man so I don't think that's the kind of call up you have in mind. He's probably not going to stick as a SP anyway, and I think they're probably committed to keeping Ynoa stretched out at this point regardless of which level he's pitching at. They'll obviously take it slow with Touki, and De La Cruz has the big fastball/slider combo that could make him helpful in the pen if the other RHPs continue to struggle.

You literally said this :

"At the end of the day, answering anymore questions about it becomes "barking" - saying he doesn't want to talk right now is as clear as can be IMO. "

They've asked him this question multiple times since ST started. Seems like once a week almost. His answer hasn't changed. That isn't barking. And when he inevitably gets asked the same question next week or a month from now, his answer will undoubtedly be the same.
