Second Guessers Special: Unfilled Off-Season Wish List

Catchers and pitchers are about to report. Presumably Frank Wren doesn't have any significant moves left.

What do you wish he had done this off-season but left undone.

The one item on my list would be another lefty reliever. Oliver Perez is still out there.

Probably keep EOF or add a veteran lefty RP.

Minus that, cant complain.

Trade Uggla but takes two to tango.

Wasnt expecting them to do much, not that they needed too.

Hard to second guess him (and I'm not a particularly big fan of Wren). It would have been hard to sign McCann, Hudson or O'Flaherty to the deals they signed.

Would have loved to see something done with Uggla, but as Heyward (the poster) says, it takes interest from somewhere else. My guess if he doesn't perform in spring training and is passed by La Stella or someone else, he'll get released and we'll be paying him not to play or to play in another city.

He's made a couple of good longer term moves recently with the Freeman and Heyward deals and I think he'll be watching the waiver wire closely as spring training winds down. I still think we need a little bench help and maybe a bullpen arm or two. Those types of guys can usually be found during the latter days of spring training.

Wren's biggest move this off-season was the Freeman contract. Anyone have some doubts about that move. A contract of that magnitude is not without risk.

I think Wren made a mistake not aquiring Norichicka Aoki. He woukd have been a perfect 4th outfielder for the team and pinch hitter. If BJ does not return to his career norm then Aoki takes his starting spot.

Other than that he has had a great offseason. The only valid criticizim is that he put himself in a financial corner with uggla and bj. The payroll might be 100 million but we have to operate like a 70 million club because we get nothing from those 2.

Who do you think we might have had to give up to get Aoki?

Uhh, the Royals gave up a pretty good prospect under control for 5-6 years for Aoki.

The only question I have is are there enough championship caliber type players that will make the team. We lost a lot in the leadership department with the departures of McCann, Hudson, and Reed Johnson. We can argue all we want about the productivity of those players on the field and the contracts that they received, but they void they leave in the clubhouse is going to be huge and tough to replace. Who steps it up in those role(s)? It also makes me uneasy as I don't think Fredi G is exactly a genius or leader in this regard. Over the past two years we have lost Bobby, Prado, Chipper, Hudson, & McCann, all known to be leaders and heart and soul of the clubs. And out of all of them Bobby is the hardest to replace, if he was still here, there is no doubt in my mind someone would step up as a player(s) in that regard, but instead we have the Mo Cheeks of managers.

I would have doled out a few more minor league deals like Maholm and Owings. If Owings got it together and could pinch hit\OF instead of Doumit we save some $$$. Letting Huddy, and EOF go were the right calls. McCann too...

I liked most of the deals. I thought he went a little big on Freeman, but you are at the mercy of the market to an extent. He may have been intent on testing FA, and that spells trouble for us. I would have pegged him at around 18m a year.

We did sign Gamel, Garcia, Yunesky Maya, Tyler Greene and a couple others to minor league deals. I think Terdoslavich could have filled the role that is intended for Doumit pretty well, with the exception of being the third catcher.

Traded Heyward for someone who doesn't smoke crack

Good luck.

The only move the Braves made or didn't make was not getting rid of Uggla. I would have taken a sack of broken bats for him.
