Snit post-game quote.

So stupid.
I’ll always love Snit for his team building and chemistry with the guys but good lord that is an idiotic take.
Meanwhile Buck used his best pitcher to face the most difficult part of a lineup.
Two old heads and they couldn’t be more different.

Jansen is no spring chicken. I have no problem limiting him.

Nor do it, but you can do so without restricting him to one particular type of outing.

The goal is to win games, not get saves. A one run game in the 9th, when the team has fought back from what appeared to be an insurmountable deficit and momentum is on their side, is a very defensible time to use your best reliever. It is not a time to use one of the last two guys at the end of the bullpen...at least not this late in the season when a division title and first round bye may be at stake.

I remember after losing a game on the road in extra innings (where if you give up a run, you lose the game)... and we went to our very last pitcher in the pen before using Kimbrel and eventually lost in like the 14th innings.

Freddy G said: "You can't use your closer in a tie game on the road"

It's baffling to me that managers legitimately manage to a statistic that has zero impact to the game. 3 run lead? Closer! 4 run lead? Scrub! Tie game in extras on the road? Scrub! Winning by 2 on the road in extras? Closer!

If the save wasn't a statistic they would be managed completely different

It’s less about Jansen and more about his logic for using guys in a close game.

the team fought back from 6-1 and had momentum on their side. Snit proceeds to use two of the bottom guys. Minter Iglesias Jansen were all available.

I call it ahead relievers and behind relievers. Snit will only use the top guys when ahead. When behind, he uses the behind guys. He is okay with a comeback, but doesn't really believe it will happen, so he uses the behind guys and hopes for the best.

Last night was the perfect example.

Well he only specifically referred to Jansen and as much as I’d like to go against Snit here I am of the mind that Jansen must be handled a certain type of way. He needs clean innings to be successful and he can’t overdo it.

I don’t think it’s a matter of believing as much as it’s a matter of playing the odds. You also have to pick spots to get guys work and get guys rest.

I'm ok on KJ given older, etc.

But its crazy that we'd use our good relievers when up 5-0 in Game One and not down 6-5. If we don't have confidence that Stephens can close a 5-0 game he shouldn't be on the roster, much less pitching in a 6-5 game. Of course, we do have confidence he could close out a 6-5 game, so its silly in general.

We will either be ahead or behind by 6 and have to pitch Jansen tonight to get him some work

And none of our beat writers will call him on his logic after the game. I’m stunned someone finally asked him about not using his best pitchers in key situations.

There is not a more useless group of people than our beat writers... well maybe our TV announcers (Frenchy not included)

Several games this year like the san fran one we were down one and instead of Minter in the 8th or 9th he uses Stephens. He used minter the previous few days in Chicago during a blowout but not in a tight game.

This isn't anything new.
