Solid Bets in FA

Really meant rock solid production...reliability. We have struggled in this area of late.

I'd have David Price up there then, but i worry about the later years since the deal would be a 6-8 year deal.

But cant argue with how consistent he is.

I'd love to have Uribe back. The only good thing about the weekend series was watching Uribe play baseball.

With all the pitching assets the Braves have acquired in the past year, I don't see them going after Price. I think the idea of this FO is to build the rotation from within and fill gaps in the lineups with FA.

Only problem is the FA market is pretty weak for hitting minus Jason, Justin, and Cespedes.

Speaking of Justin, he's been pretty meh for a while now.

April: 21-82 (.259 AVG), 6 homers, 14 RBIs, May: 37-108 (.343), 6 homers, 23 RBIs, .418 OBP, June: 19-97 (.196), 2 homers, 9 RBIs, .319 OBP, July: 4-34 (.118), 0 homers, 2 RBIs, .162 OBP.

That's just not good. I'm sure he will get hot and get back on it, but that is pretty alarming as he's really only had ONE good month, one solid and two terrible.

It is odd though, as his bat has been terrible at Petco with a .306 at home and only .208 away.

Such an odd hitter. Very good, but odd.

Thats how he's always been.

The strategy to take is to spread our funds widely among four or five players who will be cheap relative to baseline performance rather than blowing it all on a Price or a Greinke.

I'd like to see the Braves add one core position player via trade who is young and controllable. Preferably C or 3B. We'll need to part with some prospects at positions of depth (SP and MI).

Beyond that, I'm hoping they will continue to look for "buy low" opportunities with free agents and salary dump acquisitions. Target guys who can be acquired or signed for 1-2 years. Downside risk is low, and they become trade assets if we fall out of contention. It's not as sexy as discussing Price or Greinke, but I think it's a low-risk way to build a 2016 wild card contender. I have no interest in winning the 2015-2016 offseason.

Yup I'm interested in signing guys like Zobrist and Avila and bringing back Uribe and KJ. We will also need a veteran reliever or two. I am open to trading for a catcher. If we use up one of our starting pitching candidates (Wood, Teheran, Miller, Folty, Williams, Banuelos or Wisler) in such a trade, I would favor signing a veteran pitcher like Lohse.

To me the strategy for building a contending team that is lowest risk and most cost effective is to surround Freeman and Simmons with a bunch of guys who can produce solid performances. You want starters who project to give you 2-3 WAR and a bench and bullpen that has a bunch of guys like Kelly Johnson and Eric O'Flaherty . And have a strong second bench in AAA. What you want to avoid is giving a lot of at bats or innings to replacement level or worse players. We've had too much of that in recent years. We've had a lot of good players turn in very good performances that were wasted by totally unproductive teammates. If you construct a deep 25 man roster and deep AAA second bench, you can minimize the number of at bats and innings given to "black hole" type players. We have to realize that signing someone like Greinke or Price will significantly compromise our chances of building that kind of depth.
