Because the average person o nthere isn't smart enough to solve things like this, but dumb enough to post the wrong answers to these polls

I've seen answers all over the place. Most popular is 2. Which is just silly. Some people sat there and screamed PEMDAS and preached about being right and got 17, some did that same and got -17. Best I can figure for -17 is they added -18 and postive 2 and got -20 and then added positve 3 to it? I don't know it's bad. Some people got numbers I have no clue how they got.

For starters, there's a super easy way to filter yourself here, before posting, type said math problem into google. Google will give you the answer in no time. Even if your education failed you because you can't remember in PEMDAS that you do multiplication and division and addition and subtraction in left to right, you can not look like an idiot by just using Google.

Social media really brings out the dumb in people. The dumb and the hatred show really strong.

Its not -17? I thought multiplication went before addition/subtratction? Anyways, I am sure I could have done this when I was back in school. Its been 15 years since I had to worry about **** like this. Heres a real riddle, how did I manage to be in an advanced math class and remedial math class at the same time back in school.

It's -13, not -17.

And these things are stupid. Zeets, even though I don't understand the incredulence, I agree.

And I get that. I personally don't participate in these things that are posted as ways to drive up visibility of a page. That's the whole purpose is to have something that's really easy or really silly and then people respond en masse and join in. It's quite brilliant, except that people don't realize it.

This is a terribly written equation.

But if you do use PEMDAS the way it's supposed to be you're going to get -17. The - in front of 18 after you multiply 6 and 3 doesn't make it negative. So you'd simply use parentheses to separate 3-(18+2) and get 3-(20). If you did make the - into (-1)(20) you'd still get 3-20 and it'd be -17.

There's no parenthesis. You simplify the equation

3-3*6+2
3-18+2
-15+2
-13

People often don't realize PEMDAS is really PE(MD)(AS)

Unless theres a rule that if it's only subtraction and addition left you go left to right no matter which operation you're going to get -17 with PEMDAS.

For those that subtracted 3-18 instead of (-18)+2 you're gonna get -13 instead of -17.

No you don't.

Remember PEMDAS means

Parenthesis
Exponent
Multiplication and division
Addition and subtraction.

Meaning you go in PEMDAS but as you go to the next rule or whatever the right word is you go left to right. Pull up a scientific calculator (or just use Google) it will direct you to the right answer.
