The Oscars

So, was Will Smith's slap of Chris Rock real or staged?

I don't know either way. It was awfully convenient for the Oscars. No one would be talking about them if not for this. The ratings have been terrible for years and this year was shaping up to be especially irrelevant. Basically none of the films that won major awards were ones that anyone has actually watched. It could be real but it was awfully convenient if it was.

Didn't watch the Oscars for more than a few minutes. Biggest waste of TV air time, imo. But I did see the replay.

IMO, not staged. Will was yelling at him after the incident to keep his wife's name out of his mouth. Jada recently was diagnosed with alopecia which is why her hair is short. Chris may not have known that, but that's a rude joke considering the situation. And in general, you just don't make fun of a woman's appearance, especially in a public setting like that.

That was real, Wills slowly losing it Hollywood style.

I'm not sure why he's so mad at Rock, Jada has been fooling him for years.

Those award shows are so far passed being relevant. No one cares, and its just to feed those already inflated egos. Shame they can't see the irony while they preach to the regular joes 24\7

I enjoyed the updated format with less presenters personally. I think many of the other changes were silly, but I think it flowed better than most years before.

Will Smith was drunk and/or high. It is the only way to explain his overall reactions. He was enjoying himself til his wife made it clear what he said wasn't funny to her, then the light switched. Then he got bitched at by his handler and then he cried on stage for several minutes. Not in like I won an Oscar, but like oh god what have I done, kind of way.

Though I fully believe the staged part, it would be the most Oscar thing to do. Especially considering there was no stairway to the stage like in any years past, and Will Smith was right front and center. It was like it was set up for him to do what he did. And with how fake everything is in Hollywood it's not shocking if it was setup.

Wanting to walk onto the stage at the Oscars and slap the person talking is certainly a sentiment I can relate to.

Chris Rock could have quipped right after and he was about to then held back.

Huge restraint held from Rock. Smith was out of line. If he never came on stage, everyone forgets the joke in 20 minutes.

Chris could have said "That one's gonna hurt until August" or "You can **** his wife just don't make a joke about her!"

Yeah, if that was someone else, we could’ve had a Malice at the Palace type situation (definitely would’ve tuned in for that, lol). Big time restraint shown by Rock, who’ll be the long term winner of this too when he turns it into 10 minutes in his next comedy special. Will Smith is a clown.

Yeah if smacked Dave Chappelle he would have wound up getting his ass beat. Kevin Hart would have sicked the Rock on him.

Like people have been saying...

If it was The Rock on stage, and not Chris Rock, Will would have never walked up there and tried that ****.

Not staged, imo.

Most in that audience would've loved to have been mentioned, or made fun of, by the MC. You tease people you like and the role of MC is to make everyone stop taking themselves so seriously.

Will Smith needs more therapy. Gonna be hard to live this down. That was the most unmanly and uncool thing he could've done - get his feelings hurt over something silly and slap a man in front of everyone. The apology just makes him look weak and not in control. Chris Rock, by far, showed himself to be the bigger man in the exchange.

I think only a seasoned stand-up comedian could've handled it so well. Many actors would've lost their sh't.

Saw this on Facebook and I kind of agree.

Will Smith at this point is completely broken.
He is not the bad guy here.

Jada is pulling all the strings.

She broke down his masculinity on television during a talk about why she cheated on him. Her excuse was “If he loved me enough he would’ve known”.

I think that Will Smith whole heartedly did not care about the joke Chris Rock made at the Oscars, but Jada looks over at Will once the camera pans away, as if to say
“if you dont stand up for me, this is why i cheated”

Keep toxic women out of your life because it can turn nice dudes into monsters

Agreed.

I don’t think it was staged for the simple reason that neither guy (Smith especially) had anything to gain. Rock comes out looking better, but I doubt a stand up comic would want to be involved in a situation like that, when their whole profession relies on people not coming on the stage to physically react to what they’re saying. And I’m cynical, but even I can’t imagine Smith taking a payoff to look like a total clown on arguably the biggest night of his career.

No question about it. Jada has run that mans nerves into the ground. Pretty surprised they let him stay in the building after TBH. Meryl Streeps face was hilarious.

Yeah it can't be as simple as making fun of his wife. The joke was out of line given Jada's struggles with alopecia. But walking up and smacking the dude on national television was just bizarre. Then he made even a bigger scene after that yelling from the crowd. There has to be more there than simply "defending my wife's honor."

Would not be surprised to hear about him going into a clinic soon for a nervous breakdown or something.
