Time Clocks

I was at the local minor league game in Mobile tonight. For the past couple seasons, there has been a clock that timed 20 seconds and it resets after each pitch is thrown. The pitcher has 20 seconds to get set. Tonight was the first time I've seen a pitcher get punished for not getting set in time. The pitcher for the Mobile BayBears twice didn't get set before the 20 second clock expired and a ball was added to the count. The BayBears manager Robby Hammock (who was Randy Johnson's catcher for his perfect game in Atlanta) got irritated both times and after the second, told the ump to not worry about the clock and just call balls and strikes.

How do you think this would fly in the majors?

Players union would never let that happen. And I wouldn't like the idea of it either. There is some gamesmanship between the hitter and pitcher than can disturb timing for either of them. I feel it should stay that way.

The clock has served the minor leagues well. Game times have been 10 minutes less on average in Chattanooga and three-hour games are WAY down.
