August 20th:

1912: The Senators Carl Cashion pitches a six inning no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Indians.

1919: The 69-game hitting streak of Joe Wilhoit of the Wichita Jobbers (Western League) ends against the Tulsa Oilers. It was the longest such streak in professional baseball history.

1938: In an 11-3 Yankees win over the A's, Lou Gehrig hits the last of his 23 career grand slams.

1945: In an 11-1 loss to the Pirates, the Dodgers Tommy Brown becomes the youngest player in M.L. history (17 years, 8 months, 14 days) to hit a home run.

1957: The White Sox Robert Keegan pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Senators.

1961: The Phillies beat the Braves 7-4 to end the longest losing streak in M.L. history at 23 games.

1985: The Mets Dwight Gooden strikes out 16 in a 3-0 win over the Giants. He becomes the first pitcher in N.L. history to record 200 strikeouts in his first two seasons.

1989: The Mets make two trades. They send Mookie Wilson to the Blue Jays for pitcher Jeff Musselman and minor leaguer Michael Brady. They also acquire Frank Viola from the Twins for Rick Aguilera, David West, Kevin Tapani, and two minor leaguers.

1998: The Cardinals Mark McGwire becomes the first player in M.L. history to record three straight seasons of 50 home runs.

2005: MLB and the umpires reach an agreement to allow instant replay to be used for boundary calls like fair or foul and difficult home runs.
 
August 21st:

1926: The White Sox Ted Lyons pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Red Sox.

1931: In the Yankees 11-7 win over the Browns, Babe Ruth hits his 600th career home run.

1932: In an 11-5 win over the Senators, the Indians Wes Feller becomes the first pitcher in the century to win 20 games in each of his first four seasons.

1947: The Maynard Midgets win the first Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.

1962: After being released by the Yankees earlier in the day, the Orioles sign Robin Roberts.

1972: The Phillies Steve Carlton sees his 15-game win streak end in a 2-1 loss to Phil Niekro and the Braves.

1975: The Cubs Rick and Paul Reuschel become the first brothers to pitch a shutout in a 6-0 win over the Dodgers. Rick would pitch the first 6.1 innings with Paul finishing the game.

1977: In his return to Shea Stadium, Tom Seaver leads the Reds to a 5-1 win over his former Mets teammates.

1980: Charlie Finley announces he sold the Athletics to Walter Haas, Jr.

1982: In a 3-2 win over the Mariners, the Brewers Rollie Fingers becomes the first pitcher to record 300 saves.

1986: In a 24-5 win over the Indians, the Red Sox Spike Owen ties Johnny Pesky's M.L. record by scoring six runs.

2002: In the longest game in Little League World Series history, Louisville, KY defeats Fort Worth, TX in 11 innings 2-1. A record 49 strikeouts is recorded.

2010: After being taunted by Phillies fans, the Nationals Nyjer Morgan throws a ball into the seats, hitting a fan in the head. Morgan would be suspended seven games.

2013: Combined with his time in Japan, the Yankees Ichiro Suzuki collects his 4,000th professional hit.
 
August 22nd:

1886: Louisville's Chicken Wolf hits a fly ball towards Reds outfielder Abner Powell. As Powell goes for the ball, a stray dog tears his pant leg, causing him to miss the ball. That results in the game winning home run for Wolf.

1917: In a 22-inning game against the Dodgers, the Pirates Carson Bigbee sets a M.L. record with 11 at bats. It was also the fourth straight extra inning game for the Pirates, setting a N.L. record.

1939: Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski is born in Southampton, New York.

1956: Hall of Famer Paul Molitor is born in St. Paul, Minnesota.

1961: Roger Maris becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit his 50th home run of the season in August.

1965: After thinking Dodgers catcher Johnny Roseboro's return throw to Sandy Koufax is too close to his head, the Giants Juan Marichal attacks him with his bat, starting a 14-minute brawl. Roseboro suffered cuts on his head.

1982: The Cardinals Glenn Brummer steals home in the 12th inning to beat the Giants 5-4.

1984: The Mets Dwight Gooden becomes the 11th pitcher in M.L. history to strike out 200 batters in his rookie season.

1989: Nolan Ryan strikes out Rickey Henderson to become the only pitcher in M.L. history to record 5,000 strikeouts.

1999: The Cardinals Mark McGwire becomes the first player in M.L. history to record four straight 50-homer seasons.

2000: The Reds Alex Ochoa hits the 142nd grand slam of the season, setting a M.L. record.

2007: The Cardinals Albert Pujols becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs in each of his first seven seasons.

2007: In the first game of a doubleheader against the Orioles, the Rangers become the first post-1900 team in the majors to score 30 runs in a game, beating the Orioles 30-3. In the nightcap, they win 9-7, breaking the A.L. record for runs scored in a doubleheader.

2011: Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday is forced to leave a game because a live moth got stuck deep into his right ear.

2012: A's pitcher Bartolo Colon is suspended 50 game after a positive test for testosterone.
 
August 23rd:

1907: The Pirates Howie Camnitz pitches a five inning no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Giants.

1936: In the Indians 4-1 win over the Browns, 17 year old Bob Feller makes his first M.L. start. He struck out seven of the first eight Browns batters, recording a total of 15 strikeouts.

1952: In a game against the Cardinals, the Giants Bob Elliot is ejected for arguing a called strike two. His replacement, Bobby Hoffman, is also ejected for arguing a third strike called in the same at bat.

1958: In a 10-1 win over the Braves, the Dodgers Gil Hodges sets a N.L. record with his 14th career grand slam.

1961: The Orioles Dave Philley collects his 22nd pinch-hit of the season, tying the M.L. record.

1982: The Mariners Gaylord Perry is ejected for applying a foreign substance to a baseball.

1989: Pete Rose agrees to a lifetime ban from baseball due to allegations that he bet on games.

1989: In the 11th inning of a 1-0 loss to the Dodgers, the Expos Youppi becomes the first mascot ever to be ejected from a game. Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda complained about him jumping on top of their dugout. The Dodgers won the game in 22 innings, making it the second longest shutout in M.L. history. Only the Astros 1-0 win over the Mets in 24 innings (1968) was longer.

1998: Barry Bonds becomes the first player in M.L. history with 400 home runs and 400 stolen bases.

2001: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record four straight seasons of 300 strikeouts.

2002: Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm dies at age 80.

2006: The Royals score ten runs in the first inning, but lose in ten innings to the Indians 15-13. They join the 1989 Pirates as the only teams in M.L. history to score ten first inning runs, but lose.

2009: The Phillies Eric Bruntlett turns an unassisted triple play to end their 9-7 win over the Mets. Bruntlett snared a line drive off the bat of Jeff Francoeur as the Mets were attempting a double steal. Bruntlett then stepped on second base to double off Luis Castillo, then tagged out Daniel Murphy to end the game.
 
August 24th:

1905: The Cubs Ed Reulbach pitches the entire game in a 2-1, 20 inning win over the Phillies.

1919: With two out in the ninth inning, the Indians Ray Caldwell is knocked unconscious by a lightning strike. He refuses to leave the game and gets the final out in a 2-1 win over the A's.

1951: In the latest idea by owner Bill Veeck, a thousand of Browns fans are given yes or no cards to vote on decisions made by the coaching staff. It appears to work as the Browns beat the A's 5-3.

1957: The Dodgers tie a M.L. record by using eight pitchers against the Braves.

1960: Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. is born in Havre De Grace, Maryland.

1963: In the first Little League World Series to be televised, Greanda Hills, CA defeats Stratford, CT 2-1 in the championship game.

1971: In a 5-4 win over the Reds, the Cubs Ernie Banks hits the last of his 512 career home runs.

1975: The Giants Ed Halicki pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Mets.

1985: The Yankees Don Baylor is hit by a pitch for the 189th time, tying a M.L. record.

2000: In his fifth rehab start, Devil Rays pitcher Tony Saunders breaks his left arm while throwing a wild pitch. He first broke his arm in a game against the Rangers on May 26, 1999.

2007: The Padres Greg Maddux becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to win ten games for twenty straight seasons.

2013: For the first time, the starters in an All-Star Game would start opposite of each other in the same game later in the season. Max Scherzer and the Tigers defeat Matt Harvey and the Mets 3-0.
 
August 25th:

1913: In a 3-0 win over the A's, the Browns Carl Weilman becomes the first player in M.L. history to strike out six straight times.

1922: After building a 25-6 lead over the Phillies, the Cubs hang on to win 26-23. The game set M.L. records for runs scored and combined hits with 51. The Phillies ended the game leaving the bases loaded.

1936: In the first inning of a 20-3 win over the Cardinals, the Braves set a M.L. record by hitting seven doubles in one inning.

1946: The Yankees become the first team in M.L. history to draw 2,000,000 fans.

1946: Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers is born in Steubenville, Ohio.

1952: The Tigers Virgil Trucks pitches his second no-hitter of the season in a 1-0 win over the Yankees.

1965: Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, the player for the New York Giants played by Burt Lancaster in the movie "Field of Dreams" dies in Chislom, Minnesota at age 85.

1967: The Twins Dean Chance pitches his second no-hitter of the month in a 2-1 win over the Indians. On August 5th, he pitched a perfect game that was shortened to five innings against the Red Sox.

1983: The Louisville Redbirds become the first team in minor league history to draw one million fans.

1985: At 20 years, nine months, and nine days old, the Mets Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest pitcher in M.L. history to win 20 games in a season.

1991: In a 5-2 win over the Dodgers, the Cardinals Lee Smith becomes the fifth pitcher to record 300 saves.

2005: With a 6-3 win over the Pirates, Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa wins his 2,195th game, passing Sparky Anderson for third on the all time list.

2012: In a blockbuster trade, the Dodgers acquire Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto, and cash considerations from the Red Sox in exchange for James Loney, Allen Webster, Ivan DeJesus, Jr., and two players to be named later (Rubby De La Rosa and Jerry Sands).
 
August 26th:

1912: The Pirates Owen Wilson hits three triples in a doubleheader against the Braves, raising his season total to 32, setting a M.L. record.

1916: The A's Joe Bush pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Indians.

1939: A doubleheader split between Reds and Dodgers are televised by NBC, the first games to be broadcasted on television. The games were on an experimental station called W2XBS.

1947: In a 16-3 loss to the Pirates, the Dodgers Dan Bankhead becomes the first black pitcher in M.L. history.

1961: Roger Maris hits his 51st home run of the season, the most at this point of any year in M.L. history.

1962: The Twins Jack Kralick pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the A's.

1972: A three-run homer by Ron Santo helps the Cubs beat the Giants 10-9. The third inning home run was his 2,000th career hit and his 1,200th run.

1973: In a 10-1 win over the A's, the Orioles Paul Blair hits an inside-the-park grand slam.

1989: The team from Trumbull, Connecticut becomes the first American squad since 1983 to win the Little League World Series.

1991: The Royals Bret Saberhagen pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the White Sox.

1996: The Mets fire Dallas Green as manager and replace him with Bobby Valentine.

2002: 63 years after the first game to be broadcasted on TV, the Yankees 10-3 win over the Rangers becomes the first to be streamed on the internet. The game is watched online by 30,000 fans on MLB.com.

2003: The Padres trade pitcher Oliver Perez and prospect Jason Bay to the Pirates for outfielder Brian Giles.

2004: In a 7-3 loss to the Royals, the Mariners Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in M.L. history to record 200 hits in his first four seasons.

2007: Dalton Carriker's walk-off grand slam in the 8th inning helps Warner Robins, Georgia defeat Tokyo, Japan 3-2 to win the Little League World Series.
 
August 27th:

1911: The White Sox Ed Walsh pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Red Sox.

1938: The Yankees Monte Pearson pitches a no-hitter in a 13-0 win over the Indians.

1951: A lengthy delay occurs during a Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League game between Batavia and Olean because of a skunk that refused to leave the playing field.

1952: In a 10-5 loss to the Cubs, the Dodgers set a N.L. record by hitting into a double play for the 23rd straight game.

1975: In a 1-0 win over the Brewers, the Twins Craig Kusick is hit by a pitch three times, setting a M.L. record.

1977: In an 8-2 win over the Yankees, the Rangers Bump Willis and Toby Harrah hit inside-the-park home runs on back to back pitches. It's the only time that has happened in M.L. history.

1978: The Reds Joe Morgan becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 200 home runs and steal 500 bases.

1982: In a 5-4 loss to the Brewers, the A's Rickey Henderson breaks Lou Brock's single season record of 118 stolen bases.

2000: Tim Salmon's 30th home run of the season makes the Angels the first team in A.L. history to have four players hit 30 home runs in a season. The other Angels to do so were Mo Vaughn, Garrett Anderson, and Troy Glaus.

2005: Jeff Kent becomes the first second baseman in M.L. history to record 300 home runs.

2007: The Astros fire manager Phil Garner and is replaced on an interim basis by bench coach Cecil Cooper.

2013: The Mets trade Marlon Byrd and John Buck to the Pirates for minor-leaguer Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later (Vic Black).
 
August 28th:

1884: New York Gothams pitcher Mickey Welch sets a M.L. record by striking out the first nine hitters he faces. That record lasts until 1970 when Tom Seaver breaks it.

1926: The Indians Emil Levsen becomes the last pitcher in M.L. history to pitch two complete game wins in one day as Cleveland sweeps a doubleheader against the Red Sox.

1945: Dodgers President Branch Rickey holds his first meeting with Jackie Robinson.

1967: In the ninth inning of a 3-2 Reds loss to the Phillies, Chico Ruiz becomes the only player to ever pinch hit for Johnny Bench.

1977: In an 11-0 win over the Cardinals, the Dodgers Steve Garvey becomes the fourth player in M.L. history to collect five extra base hits in one game.

1990: The Cubs Ryne Sandberg becomes the first second baseman in M.L. history to have consecutive seasons of 30 home runs.

1992: In a 22-2 win over the Blue Jays, the Brewers set an A.L. record by collecting 31 hits.

2003: In a 3-1 win over the Braves, the Mets 20-year old shortstop Jose Reyes becomes the youngest player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate.

2003: The Dodgers Eric Gagne sets a M.L. record with his 44th straight save.

2008: The Phillies/Cubs game at Wrigley Field becomes the first game with the use of video replay being available.
 
August 29th:

1918: The Cubs clinch the National League pennant.

1951: The Yankees trade rookie pitcher Lew Burdette and $50,000 to the Braves for Johnny Sain. In the 1957 World Series, Burdette pitched three complete game wins in helping the Braves beat the Yankees.

1966: The Beatles play their final concert together at the Giants home stadium, Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

1966: In a 4-2 Cubs victory over the Braves, Robin Roberts gets the win in relief. Roberts becomes the only pitcher to beat the Braves when they played in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta.

1971: The Braves Hank Aaron becomes the first player in N.L. history to drive in 100 runs in eleven different seasons.

1977: The Cardinals Lou Brock steals two bases against the Padres, extending his career total to 893, breaking Ty Cobb's 41-year old record.

1985: The Yankees Don Baylor is hit by a pitch for a M.L. record 190th time.

1989: In the first ever matchup of the reigning Cy Young Award winners, Frank Viola leads the Mets past Orel Hershiser and the Dodgers 1-0.

1993: The Royals George Brett joins Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the only players in M.L. history to record 200 stolen bases, 3,000 hits, and 300 home runs.

1996: Bobby Bonilla hits his 20th home run of the season, making the Orioles the only team in M.L. history to have seven players with 20 homers. The other Orioles are Rafael Palmerio, Roberto Alomar, Cal Ripken, Jr., B.J. Surhoff, Brady Anderson, and Chris Hoiles.

2000: In the bottom of the ninth in the Reds/Braves game at Turner Field, most of the lights go out in the stadium. During the delay, the song, "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" is played.

2004: The Cardinals Albert Pujols joins Hall of Famers Al Simmons, Joe DiMaggio, and Ted Williams as the only players in M.L. history to record 40 homers and 100 RBIs in four straight seasons.

2008: With a 14-3 win over the Orioles, the Rays assure themselves of their first winning season in the team's eleven year history.

2010: After initially being ruled a double, the umpires use replay to determine the Braves Brian McCann did hit a walk-off homer to beat the Marlins 7-6.
 
August 30th:

1905: In his first M.L. at bat, Ty Cobb doubles off the New York Highlanders Jack Chesbro.

1912: The Browns Earl Hamilton pitches a no-hitter in a 5-1 win over the Tigers.

1916: The Red Sox Dutch Leonard pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Browns.

1918: Ted Williams is born in San Diego, California.

1928: Tris Speaker plays in his final M.L. game. In his Hall of Fame career, Speaker hit for an average of .345, sixth best in M.L. history.

1950: In a 4-0 win over the Pirates, the Giants Eddie Stankey ties a M.L. record by drawing a walk in seven straight plate appearances.

1952: Nine time All-Star and Hall of Fame inductee Arky Vaughn drowns along with a friend when their boat capsizes in a volcanic lake near Eagleville, California.

1953: In a 19-4 win in the first of a doubleheader win over the Pirates, the Braves hit a M.L. record eight home runs in one game. They hit four more in the 11-5 nightcap win, setting the record for homers in a doubleheader.

1965: A month after breaking his hip, Casey Stengel announces his retirement as manager of the Mets, ending a 56-year career in baseball as a player, coach, and manager.

1975: The Braves fire manager Clyde King and replace him with Connie Ryan.

1984: The Red Sox Jim Rice grounds into his 33rd double play of the season, setting a M.L. record.

1986: The Yankees Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the first 40+ year olds to start both games of a doubleheader. John loses the first game to the Mariners 1-0 with Niekro winning the nightcap 3-0.

1998: With a 7-5 defeat to the Reds, the Marlins lose their 89th game of the year, the most for a defending champion in M.L history.

1998: Toms River, New Jersey defeats Japan 12-9 to become the first American team to win the Little League World Series since 1993.

2000: With a 5-2 victory over the Reds, the Braves Bobby Cox wins his 1,600th game as a manager, passing Tommy Lasorda for 14th on the all-time list.

2002: Just hours before a strike would have started, the players and owners agree to a new four year CBA.

2006: The Padres acquire David Wells from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.

2006: In a 13-0 win over the Nationals, the Mets Julio Franco drives in five runs. At age 48, he's the oldest to do so in M.L. history.

2006: The Red Sox Curt Schilling becomes the 14th pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.
 
August 31st:

1915: The Cubs Jimmy Lavender pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants.

1935: In a 5-0 win over the Indians, the White Sox Vern Kennedy becomes the sixth rookie in M.L. history to pitch a no-hitter. He also hit a three run triple.

1950: The Dodgers Gil Hodges hits four home runs in a 19-3 win over the Braves.

1957: In an Appalachian League game, Kingsport's Steve Dalkowski strikes out 24 Bluefield batters while also walking 18, hitting four batters, and threw six wild pitches. Kingsport loses 9-8.

1990: In the Mariners 5-2 win over the Royals, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. becomes the first father and son to play on the same team in M.L. history. They would both score a run in the game.

1990: The Red Sox acquire relief pitcher Larry Andersen from the Astros for first baseman Jeff Bagwell.

1992: The A's trade Jose Canseco to the Rangers for Ruben Sierra, Jeff Russell, Bobby Witt, and cash.

1997: Andruw Jones hits the Braves tenth grand slam of the season, setting a N.L. record.

2004: The Indians tie the record for the most lopsided shutout in M.L. history in a 22-0 rout over the Yankees.

2005: The Marlins Jeremy Hermida becomes only the second player in M.L. history to hit a grand slam in his first at bat. The only other player to do so was the Phillies Bill Duggleby back in 1898.

2011: In a 3-1 win over the Nationals, the Braves Craig Kimbrel sets a M.L. rookie record by recording his 41st save of the season.
