January 24th:

1939: "Wee" Willie Keller, George Sisler, and Eddie Collins are elected to the Hall of Fame.

1955: To try and speed up the game, MLB announces a new rule stating that a pitcher has 20 second to make a pitch after getting into position.

1973: Warren Spahn is elected to the Hall of Fame.

1980: Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon purchase the Mets for $21.2 million.
 
January 25th:

1945: Dan Topping, Del Webb, and Larry MacPhail purchase the Yankees for $2.8 million.

1949: Lou Boudreau signs a two year deal worth $65,000 to be the Indians player/manager.

2005: The Marlins and Carlos Delgado agree to a four year deal worth $52 million.

2008: The Twins sign Justin Morneau to a six year/$80 million deal and Michael Cuddyer to a three year contract worth $24 million.

2008: The Yankees sign Robinson Cano to a six year deal worth $55 million.

2012: The Yankees Jorge Posada announces his retirement after 17 seasons.
 
January 26th:

1951: Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx are elected to the Hall of Fame.

2002: The Mariners trade David Bell to the Giants for Desi Relaford.

2009: The Royals agree to a four year deal worth $38 million with pitcher Zach Greinke.

2012: The Tigers agree to a nine year deal worth $214 million deal with Prince Fielder.
 
January 27th:

1944: Lou Perini, Guido Rugo, and Joe Maney gain control of the Boston Braves. They immediately fire manager Casey Stengel.

1956: The NFL's New York Giants announce they are leaving the Polo Grounds for Yankee Stadium. This adds to speculation that the baseball Giants could soon be leaving the Polo Grounds as well.

1982: The Cubs trade Ivan DeJesus to the Phillies for Larry Bowa and Ryne Sandberg.

1997: The Red Sox trade Jose Canseco to the A's for John Wasdin and cash.

2009: The Rockies and Ubaldo Jimenez agree to a four year deal.
 
January 28th:

1961: The International League Board of Directors votes to move the franchise in Montreal to Syracuse.

2008: The Rays and pitcher James Shields agree to a four year deal worth $38 million.
 
January 29th:

1936: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson are elected as the first class into the Hall of Fame.

1958: Stan Musial signs a $100,000 deal with the Cardinals, the first six figure contract in N.L. history.

1967: The Veterans Committee elects Branch Rickey and Lloyd Waner for the Hall of Fame.

1981: Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn purchase the White Sox from Bill Veeck's group.

1988: The Dodgers sign Kirk Gibson to a three year deal.

1995: Deion Sanders appears in Super Bowl XXIX with the San Francisco 49ers. He becomes the first athlete to appear in both the Super Bowl and World Series.

2002: The Astros sign Lance Berkman to a three year deal worth $10.5 million.

2008: Baseball announces the Hall of Fame Game will not be played again after June 16th game between the Padres and Cubs.

2008: The Mets agree to acquire Johan Santana from the Twins for Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, Deolis Guerra, and Carlos Gomez. The Mets have three days to agree to terms with Santana on a new deal.
 
January 30th:

1926: The rules commission discusses doing away with the intentional walk.

1958: Commissioner Ford Frick announces fans will no longer select the All-Star teams. Players and coaches will start selecting the teams.

1987: The Cubs trade third baseman Ron Cey to the A's for infielder Luis Quinones.

2012: The Rangers sign manager Ron Washington to a two year contract extension.
 
January 31st:

1919: Jackie Robinson is born in Cairo, Georgia.

1931: Ernie Banks is born in Dallas, Texas.

1947: Nolan Ryan is born in Refugio, Texas.

1959: Joe Cronin signs a seven year deal to be A.L. President.

1961: Voters in Houston approve financing for a domed stadium to bring a M.L. team to the city. The stadium would become the Astrodome.

1980: Free agent second baseman Joe Morgan signs a deal with the Astros.

1983: Tony Perez signs a one year deal with the Phillies.

2000: Commissioner Bud Selig suspends Braves reliever John Rocker until May 1st for racially and ethnically insensitive remarks made in a Sports Illustrated article.

2003: The White Sox rename their ballpark U.S. Cellular Field.

2013: After being traded by the Braves in the Justin Upton trade earlier in the month, Martin Prado agrees to a four year deal worth $40 million with his new team, the Diamondbacks.
