1953: Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley announces the team has replace manager Chuck Dressen with Walter Alston.

1971: The Braves Earl Williams is named N.L. Rookie of the Year.

1975: The Twins name Gene Mauch manager.

1982: Cal Ripken, Jr. is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

1986: The Twins announce interim manager Tom Kelly gets the job on a permanent basis.

2003: Hall of Famer Warren Spahn dies at age 82.

2005: The Marlins trade Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, and Guillermo Mota to the Red Sox for four prospects, including Hanley Ramirez.

2006: Carlos Lee signs a six year deal worth $100 million with the Astros.

2009: Albert Pujols is named N.L. MVP.

1914: Joe DiMaggio is born in Martinez, California.

1930: The Giants Bill Terry and the Senators Joe Cronin are named their leagues MVPs.

1941: Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau, at age 24, is named the team's new manager.

1944: Commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis dies at age 74.

1949: Ted Williams is named A.L. MVP.

1970: Yankees catcher Thurman Munson is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

1980: The Yankees name Gene Michael manager.

1981: The Brewers Rollie Fingers is the first relief pitcher to be named MVP.

1986: The A's Jose Canseco is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

2002: The Red Sox hire Theo Epstein as their new GM. At age 28, he becomes the youngest to hold that position in M.L. history.

2003: The Cubs trade first baseman Hee Seop Choi and a minor league player to be named later to the Marlins for first baseman Derrick Lee.

2005: The Phillies trade first baseman Jim Thome to the White Sox for outfielder Aaron Rowand.

1960: The Senators, relocating to Minnesota from Washington, officially changes their name to the Twins.

1975: The Red Sox Fred Lynn is named A.L. MVP, becoming the first to win that honor after also being named Rookie of the Year in the same season.

1980: The Phillie Mike Schmidt is named N.L. MVP.

1986: The Pirates trade Rick Rhoden, Cecilio Guante, and Pat Clements to the Yankees for prospects, including pitcher Doug Drabek.

1996: A new collective bargaining agreement is done. The new agreement allows interleague play during the regular season and a payroll tax on players.

2003: The A's trade catcher Ramon Hernandez and outfielder Terrence Long to the Padres for Mark Kotsay.

1947: Despite winning the triple crown, Ted Williams is edged out by one vote by Joe DiMaggio for the A.L. MVP.

1967: The Mets send pitcher Bill Denhey and $100,000 to the Senators to acquire Gil Hodges to be the team's new manager.

1985: The Cardinals Vince Coleman is named N.L. Rookie of the Year.

1991: The Mets sign Eddie Murray to a two year deal worth $7.5 million.
