1903: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Boston Pilgrims 7-3 in the first World Series game ever played. Jimmy Sebring hits the first home run in World Series history.

1932: Joe DiMaggio makes his professional debut for the San Francisco Seals.

1933: Babe Ruth makes his final appearances as a pitcher, going the distance while giving up 12 hits and five earned runs as the Yankees beat the Red Sox 6-5.

1944: The Browns defeat the Yankees 5-2 to clinch their only A.L. pennant in St. Louis.

1945: Hall of Famer Rod Carew is born in Gatun, Panama Canal Zone.

1951: The Giants defeat the Dodgers 3-1 in the first of their best of three playoff for the N.L. pennant. It is the first M.L. game televised coast-to-coast. The game was broadcasted by CBS, who had to get the signal from ABC, who already had an arrangement with WOR-TV to show Dodgers regular season games in Brooklyn.

1955: The Cardinals Bill Virdon is named N.L. Rookie of the Year.

1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth's record.

1961: The Angels lose 8-5 to the Indians in the final game at the California version of Wrigley Field.

1967: On the last day of the season, the Red Sox defeat the Twins 5-3, clinching the A.L. pennant.

1970: The Phillies defeat the Expos 2-1 in ten innings in the final game at Connie Mack Stadium.

1973: The Mets, who were behind by 11.5 games and in last place in the N.L. East, defeat the Cubs 6-4 to win the division.

1974: The Mets Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in N.L. history to record seven straight seasons of 200 strikeouts.

1975: The Expos fire manager Gene Mauch and replace him with Karl Kuehl.

1978: Gaylord Perry joins Walter Johnson and Bob Gibson as the only pitchers in M.L. history with 3,000 strikeouts.

1980: The Red Sox fire manager Don Zimmer.

1984: Peter Uberroth becomes the sixth commissioner of baseball.

1995: The Yankees and Rockies becomes the first Wild Card winners in the game's new postseason format.

2004: Ichiro Suzuki records his 258th hit of the season, breaking George Sisler's record set in 1920.

2006: With the exception of the strike seasons of 1981, 1994, and 1995, for the first time in M.L. history, there are no 20-game winners in either league.

2007: In the 13th inning of a one game playoff for the N.L. Wild Card, Matt Holliday scores on a close play at the plate on a shallow sac fly from Jamet Carroll, giving the Rockies a 9-8 win over the Padres.

2009: The Cardinals Tony La Russa manages his 4,770th M.L. game, moving him past John McGraw for second on the all time list. Only Connie Mack's 7,755 are more.

2014: In the Giants 8-0 N.L. Wild Card win over the Pirates, Brandon Crawford becomes the first shortstop in postseason history to hit a grand slam.

1908: The Cleveland Naps Addie Joss pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

1920: In the only tripleheader played in the century, the Reds win the first two games 13-4 and 7-3 with the Pirates winning the third game 6-0.

1932: The Yankees defeat the Cubs 13-6 to sweep the World Series. It was their 12th straight World Series win.

1947: During a 9-8 Yankees loss in Game 3 to the Dodgers, Yogi Berra hits the first pinch hit home run in World Series history.

1954: The Giants defeat the Indians 7-4 to complete a World Series sweep.

1961: Casey Stengel agrees to manage the Mets.

1965: The Dodgers win the N.L. pennant with a 2-1 victory over the Braves.

1968: In Game 1, Bob Gibson sets a World Series record with 17 strikeouts in the Cardinals 4-0 win over the Tigers.

1969: The Seattle Pilots lose their final game 3-1 to the A's. They move to Milwaukee the next year and become the Brewers.

1977: With Dusty Baker's 30th home run of the season, the Dodgers become the first team in M.L. history to have four players with 30 home runs. The other Dodgers were Steve Garvey (33), Reggie Smith (32), and Ron Cey (30).

1978: In a one game playoff for the A.L. East title, Bucky Dent hits a three run homer to lift the Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Red Sox.

1983: Carl Yastrzemski singles in his final game, helping the Red Sox beat the Indians 3-1.

1985: The Tigers Darrell Evans becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 40 home runs in both leagues. He did so for the Braves in 1973.

1985: The Pirates are sold to a group of investors called Pittsburgh Associates from the Galbreath family and Warner Communications.

1986: The Mets Dwight Gooden becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 200 strikeouts in his first three seasons.

1991: The Blue Jays clinch the A.L. East title while becoming the first team in sports history to draw four million fans in one season.

1970: In the Orioles 10-6 win in Game 1 over the Twins, Mike Cuellar becomes the first pitcher to homer in LCS play.

1974: Frank Robinson signs a $175,000 contract to be player/manager of the Indians, making him the first black manager in M.L. history.

1976: An infield hit of the Tigers Dave Roberts marks the last base hit of Hank Aaron's career.

1982: On the season's final day, the Brewers defeat the Orioles 10-2, edging Baltimore by one game for the A.L. East title. It also marked the end of Earl Weaver's 15 year tenure as Orioles manager.

1990: George Brett becomes the only player in M.L. history to win a batting title in three different decades.

1993: The Braves defeat the Rockies while the Giants lose 12-1 to the Dodgers on the season's last day. That makes the difference as the Braves 104 wins beats the Giants and their 103 to capture the N.L. West title.

1995: The Braves, Reds, Yankees, and Indians win the first Division Series games in the newly expanded postseason format.

1999: Mark McGwire hits his 522nd home run, passing Willie McCovey and Ted Williams for tenth on the all time list.

1999: The Astors defeat the Dodgers 9-4 to clinch the N.L. Central title. It also marked the last regular season game at the Astrodome.

2000: In the third inning of the Cardinals Game 1 win over the Braves in the NLDS, rookie pitcher Rick Ankiel sets a modern M.L. record with five wild pitches.

2005: The Tigers name Jim Leyland manager, to replace Alan Trammel who was fired the prior day.

2010: The Diamondbacks make interim manager Kirk Gibson as their permanent skipper.

2012: After one season, Bobby Valentine is fired as Red Sox manager.

2014: In the longest game in postseason history, the Giants defeat the Nationals 2-1 in 18 innings. The second game of the NLDS takes six hours and 23 minutes to play. Brandon Belt's home run makes the difference.

1888: James Francis Galvin of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to win 300 games.

1918: Eddie Grant, a former Giants third baseman, becomes the first major league player to be killed in action during World War I.

1942: The Cardinals defeat the Yankees 2-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1951: In Game 2 of the World Series against the Giants, Mickey Mantle gets his cleats caught on a drainage cap, causing a severe knee injury and ending his season.

1953: Billy Martin's walk-off single in Game 6 gives the Yankees a 4-3 win over the Dodgers and a fifth straight World Series title.

1963: In the seventh inning of Game 4, Mickey Mantle homers off Sandy Koufax to tie Babe Ruth's World Series record of 15 home runs. However, the Dodgers win the game and finish a series sweep.

Since then, the Cubs have not appeared in a Fall Classic.

1959: The largest crowd to watch a M.L. game, 92,706 fans, watch Bob Shaw and the White Sox defeat Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers 1-0 in Game 5 of the World Series.

Irate by the horrible call, Braves fans at Turner Field throw debris from the stands onto the field. The game was delayed 19 minutes for the grounds crew to clean up the mess. The Cardinals would win the game, which marked the end of the career for the Braves Chipper Jones.

1919: The Reds defeat the White Sox 10-5 to win the World Series in eight games. Rumors begin to fly about the possibility of the White Sox threw the series.

1928: The Yankees defeat the Cardinals 7-3 to sweep the World Series for the second straight year.

1934: The Cardinals defeat the Tigers 11-0 in Game 7 to win the World Series at Detroit. During the game, Tiger fans are angered at the Cardinals Joe Medwick for an aggressive slide in the sixth inning into third baseman Marv Owen. The fans start throwing fruit at Medwick, who is taken out of the game by Commissioner Landis for his own safety.

1938: The Yankees defeat the Cubs 8-3 to sweep the World Series, becoming the first team to win three straight.

1949: During the ninth inning of the Yankees 10-8 win in Game 5 over the Dodgers, the lights are turned on at Ebbets Field, making it the first World Series game to be played under artificial lighting.

1958: The Yankees defeat the Braves 6-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1961: The Yankees defeat the Reds 13-5 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1969: Sparky Anderson accepts a deal to become the Reds new manager.

1989: The Giants defeat the Cubs 3-2 in Game 5 to win the NLCS.

1996: In the eighth inning of Game 1 of the ALCS and the Yankees trailing the Orioles 4-3, a fly ball hit by Derek Jeter goes deep into right field. As Orioles right fielder Tony Tarasco gets ready to catch it, 12 year old Jeffrey Maier reaches over the wall and catches the ball clearly in the field of play. Despite Tarasco's argument, umpire Rich Garcia rules home run. The Yankees go on to win the game and many fans still believe the controversial play changed the entire ALCS, which the Yankees eventually won.

2005: In the 18th inning, the Astros Chris Burke hits a walk-off home run to defeat the Braves 7-6 in Game 4 of the NLDS and sends Houston to the NLCS.

2010: The Yankees defeat the Twins 6-2 to finish an ALDS sweep.
 
October 10th:

1904: The Boston Pilgrims beat the New York Highlanders 3-2 to win their second straight A.L. pennant. The Pilgrims win the game when Jack Chesbro, who won 41 games that season, threw a wild pitch in the ninth, allowing the winning run to score.

1920: In the Indians 8-1 win over the Dodgers, a series of World Series firsts: Elmer Smith hits the first grand slam, Jim Bagby the first home run for a pitcher, and the first unassisted triple play turned by Bill Wambsgnass.

1923: In the first World Series game broadcasted, Casey Stengel's inside the park homer in the ninth at Yankee Stadium gives the Giants a 5-4 win.

1924: In the bottom of the 12th in Game 7, Giants catcher Hank Gowdy, trying to catch a foul pop-up hit by Muddy Ruel, stumbles over his mask and the ball drops. Ruel would then double and score, wining the World Series for the Senators.

1948: The largest crowd in World Series history, 86,288 fans in Cleveland. watches two Hall of Famers face off in Game 5. Warren Spahn and the Braves beats Bob Feller and the Indians 11-5.

1951: The Yankees defeat the Giants 4-3 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1956: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 9-0 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1957: In Game 7, Lew Burdette records his third win of the series as the Braves beat the Yankees 5-0 to win the World Series.

1973: The Mets defeat the Reds 7-2 in the fifth and deciding game of the NLCS.

1982: The Brewers become the first team in to overcome an 0-2 deficit in the best of five format to beat the Angels to win the ALCS.

2000: In the Mariners 2-0 win in Game 1, they and the Yankees combine for 22 strikeouts to set an ALCS record. The Yankees struck out 13 times.

2009: The Dodgers defeat the Cardinals 5-1 to finish a NLDS sweep.

2010: The Phillies defeat the Reds 2-0 to finish a NLDS sweep.

2011: In Game 2 against the Tigers, Nelson Cruz hits the first walk-off grand slam in postseason, helping the Rangers win 7-3 in 11 innings and take a 2-0 series lead.

1909: In the Pirates 8-6 win over the Tigers in Game 3, Honus Wagner becomes the first player to steal three bases in a World Series game.

1911: The Tigers Ty Cobb and the Cubs Frank Schulte are named the first winners of their leagues MVP awards. Both receive new vehicles from Chalmers Automotive.

1929: With the Cubs 3-1 over the A's in Game 3, the N.L. breaks their ten game losing streak in World Series play.

1972: In the bottom of the ninth inning of the fifth and deciding game of the NLCS, the Reds George Foster scores on a wild pitch from the Pirates Bob Moose, giving Cincinnati a 4-3 win and the pennant.

1981: With a 3-0 win over the Phillies, the Expos win the N.L. East title.

1999: The Red Sox defeat the Indians 12-8 in Game 5 to win the ALCS.

2002: The Rangers name Buck Showalter manager.

2003: With the Cubs six and the Marlins eight, the teams tie the NLCS record for homers in a game.

2004: The Astros defeat the Braves 12-3 to win the NLDS in five games.

2005: The Pirates name Jim Tracy manager.

2006: Yankees pitcher Corey Lidle along with his flight instructor Tyler Stanger are killed when their plane crashes into a New York high rise apartment building.

2009: The Yankees defeat the Twins 4-1 to finish an ALDS sweep. It turns out to be the final baseball game played at the Metrodome.

2010: The Giants defeat the Braves 3-2 in Game 4 to win the NLDS. The loss marks the end of the managerial career of the Braves Bobby Cox. After a standing ovation from the home crowd at Turner Field in tribute for Bobby, the Giants stop their on-field celebration to join in the ovation.

1907: The Cubs defeat the Tigers 2-0 to win the World Series.

1920: The Indians defeat the Brooklyn Robins 3-0 to win the World Series in seven games (best of nine series).

1948: The Yankees name Casey Stengel manager.

1954: The A.L. owners approve the sale of the A's to Chicago businessman Arnold Johnson. The team will move from Philadelphia to Kansas City for the next season.

1967: The Cardinals defeat the Red Sox 7-2 to win the World Series in seven games.

1972: The A's defeat the Tigers 2-1 in the deciding Game 5 of the ALCS, winning the franchise's first pennant since 1931.

1982: In the Brewers 10-0 win over the Cardinals in Game 1, Paul Molitor becomes the first player in World Series history to record five hits in a game.

1986: With the Angels one strike away from the pennant, Dave Henderson puts the Red Sox ahead in the top of the ninth with a two run homer off Donnie Moore. The Angels tied it in the bottom half, but the Red Sox win the game in the 11th on a sac fly by Henderson.

2001: Tom Kelly retires as Twins manager after 15 seasons.

2009: The Phillies defeat the Rockies 5-4 to win the NLDS in four games.

2010: The Rangers defeat the Rays 5-1 in the fifth and deciding game of the ALDS, marking their first postseason series win in franchise history.

2012: In the fifth and deciding game of their NLDS series, the Cardinals rally from a 6-0 deficit, scoring four in the ninth and win 9-5.

2013: For the first time, two postseason games are decided by a 1-0 score on the same day. In Game 1 of the ALCS, the Tigers defeat the Red Sox 1-0 while the Cardinals defeat the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS by the same score.

1903: In the eighth game, the Boston Pilgrims defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 to win the first World Series.

1914: The "Miracle Braves" who were in last place in mid-July, defeat the A's 3-1 to complete a stunning World Series sweep.

1921: The Giants defeat the Yankees 1-0 to win the World Series in eight games.

1931: Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews is born in Texarkana, Texas.

1960: Bill Mazeroski's walk-off home rub in Game 7 lifts the Pirates to a 10-9 win over the Yankees and the World Series title. It remains the only Game 7 of a World Series to end on a home run.

1971: The Pirates defeat the Orioles 4-3 at Three Rivers Stadium in the first World Series night game.

1993: The Phillies defeat the Braves 6-3 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.
 
October 14th:

1905: The Giants defeat the A's 2-0 in Game 5 to win the World Series. This year was the only World Series in history in which each game ended in a shutout.

1906: The White Sox defeat the Cubs 8-3, winning the World Series in an upset. The Cubs had won 116 games in the regular season.

1908: In Detroit, the Cubs defeat the Tigers to win the World Series in front of 6,210 fans, the smallest crowd for a Fall Classic game. It currently stands as the last World Series that the Cubs have won in their history.

1976: Chris Chambliss hits a walk-off home run in the fifth and deciding game of the ALCS, giving the Yankees a 7-6 win over the Royals and the pennant.

1983: In the Orioles 3-2 win over the Phillies in Game 3, Jim Palmer becomes the first pitcher to win a World Series game in three different decades.

1984: The Tigers defeat the Padres 8-4 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1985: Ozzie Smith hits a walk-off home run to lift the Cardinals over the Dodgers in Game 5 of the NLCS.

1992: The Blue Jays defeat the A's 9-2 in Game 6 to win their first A.L. pennant.

1992: Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the ninth in Game 7, the Braves rally past the Pirates 3-2 to win the NLCS. The game ends when Francisco Cabrera hits a two run single, with Sid Bream sliding into home, just ahead of the throw from Barry Bonds. Cabrera had just three hits for Atlanta during the regular season.

1997: The Marlins defeat the Braves 7-4 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.

2002: The Angels defeat the Twins 13-5 in Game 5 to win the ALCS.

2003: Leading the Marlins 3-0 and five outs from their first World Series berth since 1945, the Cubs then give up eight runs on five hits, three walks, and an error. Things came apart after a fan reached over the wall and appeared to keep Moises Alou from catching a pop foul. The fan, later identified as Steve Bartman, had to be escorted by security out of Wrigley Field to protect himself from angry Cubs fans. The Marlins won 8-3, forcing a deciding Game 7.

2006: Magglio Ordonez hits a walk-off three run homer to give the Tigers a 6-3 win over the A's and sweep the ALCS.

2010: The Braves name Fredi Gonzalez as manager, replacing future Hall of Fame skipper Bobby Cox.
 
October 15th:

1892: Cincinnati's Charles Jones pitches a no-hitter against Pittsburgh on the season's last day. It's the latest date in a season that a no-hitter was pitched in M.L. history.

1917: The White Sox defeat the Giants 4-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1923: The Yankees win their first World Series title with a 6-4 victory over the Giants in Game 6.

1925: After trailing three games to one, the Pirates finish their rally with a 9-7 win over the Senators in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1946: The Cardinals defeat the Red Sox 4-3 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1964: The Cardinals defeat the Yankees 7-5 in Game 7 to win the World Series. In the loss, Mickey Mantle, in his final postseason game, hits a home run to extend his World Series record to 18.

1988: In Game 1 of the World Series against the A's, a limping Kirk Gibson hits a walk-off home run off Dennis Eckersley to give the Dodgers an incredible 5-4 victory.

1997: An eleventh inning home run by Tony Fernandez gives the Indians a 1-0 win over the Orioles in Game 6 to capture the ALCS crown.

2001: The Yankees defeat the A's 5-3 in the deciding Game 5 of the ALDS. They become the first team to win a best of five series after losing the first two games at home.

2008: The Phillies defeat the Dodgers 5-1 to win the NLCS.

2011: The Rangers defeat the Tigers 15-5 in Game 6 to win the ALCS.

1989: About 30 minutes before the start of Game 3 of the World Series in San Francisco between the A's and Giants, a major earthquake strikes the Bay Area. Commissioner Fay Vincent postpones the game and Candlestick Park is evacuated.
