1933: Babe Ruth makes his final appearances as a pitcher, going the distance while giving up 12 hits and five earned runs as the Yankees beat the Red Sox 6-5.
1944: The Browns defeat the Yankees 5-2 to clinch their only A.L. pennant in St. Louis.
1945: Hall of Famer Rod Carew is born in Gatun, Panama Canal Zone.
1951: The Giants defeat the Dodgers 3-1 in the first of their best of three playoff for the N.L. pennant. It is the first M.L. game televised coast-to-coast. The game was broadcasted by CBS, who had to get the signal from ABC, who already had an arrangement with WOR-TV to show Dodgers regular season games in Brooklyn.

1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth's record.
