October 18th:

1950: After 50 years of managing, Connie Mack retires as manager of the A's.

1960: The Yankees fire manager Casey Stengel.

1967: The A.L. owners grant permission for the A's to move from Kansas City to Oakland. The league grants a new expansion team for Kansas City as well as one in Seattle.

1977: Reggie Jackson's three home runs helps the Yankees beat the Dodgers in Game 6 to win the World Series.

2001: Larry Dierker resigns as Astros manager.

2010: The Mariners name Eric Wedge manager.

2012: The Tigers defeat the Yankees 8-1 to finish an ALCS sweep.
 
October 20th:

1931: Mickey Mantle is born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma.

1931: The Cardinals Frankie Frisch is named N.L. MVP.

1937: Hall of Famer Juan Marichal is born in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic.

1964: The Yankees name Johnny Keane manager, who resigned as Cardinals manager three days earlier. Keane is replaced by former Cardinals player Red Schoendienst.

1982: The Cardinals defeat the Brewers 6-3 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1988: The Dodgers defeat the A's 5-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1990: In one of the biggest upsets in recent World Series history, the Reds complete a four game sweep over the heavily favored A's.

1994: The Dodgers Raul Mondesi is named N.L. Rookie of the Year.

1996: The Braves Andruw Jones becomes the fourth player in World Series history to hit two home runs in the same game, doing it in a Game 1 win over the Yankees.

2000: Carlos Delgado signs a four year deal worth $68 million with the Blue Jays.

2002: In the Angels 11-10 win in Game 2 over the Giants, 20 year old Francisco Rodriguez becomes the youngest pitcher in World Series history.

2004: In Game 7 of the ALCS, the Red Sox defeat the Yankees 10-3, becoming the first team in M.L. history to rally from a three games to none deficit to win a postseason series.

2012: The Red Sox name Blue Jays pitching coach John Farrell as their new manager. As compensation, the Blue Jays receive infielder Mike Aviles from Boston.
 
October 21st:

1973: The A's defeat the Mets 5-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1975: Carlton Fisk's walk-off homer in the 12th inning give the Red Sox the win in Game 6 and forces the World Series to a seventh and deciding game.

1976: The Reds defeat the Yankees 7-2 to complete a World Series sweep.

1980: The Phillies defeat the Royals 4-1 in Game 6, winning the first World Series title in the team's 98 year history.

1998: The Yankees defeat the Padres 3-0 to finish a World Series sweep.

2004: The Cardinals defeat the Astros 5-2 in Game 7 to win the NLCS.

2006: In the first ever World Series pitching matchup featuring two rookies, Anthony Reyes and the Cardinals defeat Justin Verlander and the Tigers 7-2 in Game 1.

2009: The Phillies defeat the Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 to win their second straight N.L. pennant.
 
October 22nd:

1845: The first known box score appears in The New York Morning News.

1907: Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx is born in Sudlersville, Maryland.

1967: Joe DiMaggio is named executive vice president and consultant of the A's.

1972: The A's defeat the Reds 3-2 in Game 7, winning their first World Series in 42 years.

1974: The Giants trade Bobby Bonds to the Yankees for Bobby Murcer.

1975: Joe Morgan's ninth inning single to score Ken Griffey gives the Reds a 4-3 win over the Red Sox in Game 7 of the World Series.

1997: The game time temperature in Cleveland for Game 4 of the World Series was 35 degrees, the coldest for a postseason game in M.L. history. The Indians would win the game 10-3.

2000: In Game 2 of the World Series, the Yankees Roger Clemens throws part of a broken bat in the path of the Mets Mike Piazza as he started to run towards first. It comes after Clemens hit Piazza in the head with a pitch in a regular season game. Benches cleared after the incident. The Yankees eventually won the game 6-5, extending their World Series win streak to 14 games.

2002: In Game 3 of the World Series against the Angels, the Giants Renel Brooks-Moon become the first woman to be a P.A. announcer of any championship game in professional sports.
 
October 23rd:

1910: The A's defeat the Cubs 7-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

1945: Dodgers President Branch Rickey announces the team has signed two black players in infielder Jackie Robinson and pitcher Johnny Wright. They will be sent to the team's AAA club in Montreal.

1951: The Giants Leo Durocher is named Manager of the Year.

1958: The Pirates Danny Murtaugh is named Manager of the Year.

1993: Joe Carter's three run walk-off home run gives the Blue Jays an 8-6 win over the Phillies in Game 6 and their second straight World Series title. It's the first home run to end a World Series since Bill Mazeroski's for the Pirates in 1960.

1993: By unanimous vote, Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza is named N.L. Rookie of the Year.

1998: The Dodgers name Davey Johnson manager.

2000: The Pirates name hitting coach Lloyd McClendon as their new manager.

2002: In the Giants 4-3 win Game 4 over the Angels, Barry Bonds is intentionally walked three times, setting a new World Series record.

2010: The Giants defeat the Phillies 3-2 in Game 6 to win the NLCS.
 
October 24th:

1908: "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" by Bill Murray is introduced for the first time.

1972: Jackie Robinson dies at age 53.

1992: The Blue Jays defeat the Braves 4-3 in 11 innings to win the World Series in six games.

2000: In Game 3, the Mets defeat the Yankees 4-2 to end their 14 game World Series winning streak.

2006: The owners and players agree to a new five year collective bargaining agreement.
 
October 25th:

1939: Joe DiMaggio wins his first MVP award.

1955: Branch Rickey resigns as Pirates general manager.

1955: The Indians trade Larry Doby to the White Sox for Chico Carrasquel and Jim Busby.

1971: Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez is born in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic.

1978: The Padres Gaylord Perry is named N.L. Cy Young Award winner, becoming the first to win the honor in both leagues. He won the A.L. award in 1972 with the Indians.

1986: One strike away from losing the World Series in Game 6, the Mets tie the game in the bottom of the tenth on a wild pitch with Mookie Wilson at the bat. Then, a slow grounder hit by Wilson goes through the legs of Bill Buckner, giving the Mets the victory and forcing a Game 7.

1987: The Twins defeat the Cardinals 4-2 in Game 7 to win the franchise's first World Series title since 1924, when the team was the Washington Senators. All games in the series were won by the home team.

2005: In the longest game in World Series history, the White Sox Geoff Blum hits a home run in the top of the 14th inning in a 7-5 win over the Astros. The game took five hours and 41 minutes to play and the White Sox took a commanding three games to none lead.

2009: The Indians name Manny Acta manager.

2010: The Blue Jays name John Farrell manager.
 
October 26th:

1911: The A's defeat the Giants 13-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1940: The Tigers Hank Greenberg is named A.L. MVP.

1950: The Yankees Phil Rizzuto is named A.L. MVP.

1960: Senators President Calvin Griffith moves the team to Minnesota, becoming the Twins. MLB places a new expansion team in Washington for the next season.

1980: Former Yankees and Tigers manager Ralph Houk is named the new skipper of the Red Sox.

1982: The Phillies Steve Carlton is named N.L. Cy Young Award winner, becoming the first to win it four times.

1985: In the bottom of the ninth and the Cardinals leading in Game 6 over the Royals, first base umpire Don Denkinger incorrectly calls Jorge Orta safe when clearly Jack Clark's throw to Todd Worrell covering first beats him. Dane Iorg would hit a walk-off two run single, giving the Royals a controversial 2-1 win and forcing the World Series to a seventh game.

1996: The Yankees defeat the Braves 3-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1997: In the bottom of the 11th, Edgar Renteria hits a walk off single to score Craig Counsell, giving the Marlins a 3-2 win in Game 7. In their fifth year, the Marlins become the fastest expansion team to win a World Series.

1998: Mike Piazza signs a seven year deal worth $91 million with the Mets.

2000: The Yankees defeat the Mets 4-2 in Game 5 to win the World Series.

2002: The Angels rally back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Giants 6-5 in Game 6, forcing the World Series to a seventh game.

2005: The White Sox defeat the Astros 1-0 to finish a World Series sweep and win their first championship since 1917.

2013: With runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth of Game 3 and tied 4-4, the Cardinals Jon Jay hits a grounder to the Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedoria, who throws home to to get Yaider Molina out. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia then makes an errant throw to third base to try and get Allen Craig. As the ball goes into the outfield, Craig collides with third baseman Will Middlebrooks. The throw beats Craig to the plate, but the umpires rule that Middlebrooks obstructed Craig, thus allowing the run and the Cardinals to win 5-4.

2014: Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras is killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic at age 22.
 
October 27th:

1922: Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner is born in Santa Rita, New Mexico.

1954: After 274 days, Joe DiMaggio's marriage to Marilyn Monroe ends in divorce.

1972: The Braves trade Rico Carty to the Rangers for Jim Panther.

1985: The Royals defeat the Cardinals 11-0 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1986: The Mets defeat the Red Sox 8-5 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

1989: In a game delayed by the earthquake ten days, the A's defeat the Giants 13-7 in Game 3, taking a three games to none lead in the World Series.

1991: Gene Larkin's single in the tenth inning scores Dan Gladden and gives the Twins a 1-0 win over the Braves in Game 7, winning a thrilling World Series. Jack Morris pitches the distance for Minnesota.

1999: The Yankees defeat the Braves 4-1 to finish a World Series sweep.

2002: The Angels defeat the Giants 4-1 in Game 7 to win their first World Series in the team's 42-year history.

2003: The Red Sox announce they will not renew the contract of manager Grady Little.

2004: The Red Sox defeat the Cardinals 3-0 in Game 4 to win their fist World Series title in 86 years.

2006: The Cardinals defeat the Tigers 4-2 in Game 5 to win the World Series. They won 83 games in the regular season, the fewest ever for a World Series champion.

2006: Bruce Bochy leaves the Padres to become the manager of division rival San Francisco.

2008: With Game 5 tied 2-2 in the seventh, rain forces the Rays/Phillies game to be suspended, making it the first game in World Series history to be started and not completed on the same day.

2009: The Astros name Brad Mills manager.

2013: In Game 4, Red Sox pitcher Koji Uehara picks off the Cardinals Kolten Wong to end the game and gives Boston a 4-2 win. It become the first game in World Series history to end on a pick-off.
 
October 28th:

1953: Red Barber resigns as the broadcaster of the Dodgers and takes over duties for the crosstown rival Yankees.

1954: The owners reject the sale of the A's to a hometown syndicate. They are sold the next week to Arthur Johnson, who moves the team to Kansas City.

1979: Dick Howser is named to take over for Billy Martin as Yankees manager.

1981: The Dodgers defeat the Yankees 9-2 in Game 6 to win the World Series.

1989: The A's defeat the Giants 9-6 to finish a World Series sweep.

1995: With a combined one-hitter by series MVP Tom Glavine and Mark Wohlers, the Braves defeat the Indians 1-0 in Game 6 to win the World Series. David Justice's home run in the sixth inning accounts for the game's only run and the one that decides the series.

2002: The Mets name Art Howe manager.

2002: The Devil Rays name Lou Piniella manager.

2007: The Red Sox defeat the Rockies 4-3 to finish a World Series sweep.

2011: The Cardinals defeat the Rangers 6-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.
 
October 29th:

1931: A's pitcher Lefty Grove is named A.L. MVP.

1942: Branch Rickey resigns as Cardinals vice president.

1959: The White Sox Early Wynn wins the Cy Young Award.

1975: The Red Sox Fred Lynn is named A.L. Rookie of the Year.

1991: The Yankees name Buck Showalter manager.

1991: The Braves Bobby Cox wins the N.L. Manager of the Year, becoming the first to win the award in both leagues. He won the award with the Blue Jays in 1985.

2008: The Phillies complete the suspended Game 5 with a 4-3 victory over the Rays and win the World Series.

2013: The White Sox sign Cuban defector Jose Abreu to a six year deal worth $68 million.
 
October 30th:

1929: The Cardinals name Gabby Street manager.

1963: Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax is named N.L. MVP.

1974: The A's Catfish Hunter is named A.L. Cy Young Award winner.

1986: The Orioles trade pitcher Storm Davis to the Padres for catcher Terry Kennedy and minor leaguer Mark Williamson.

2000: The Diamondbacks name Bob Brenly manager.

2007: The Yankees name Joe Girardi manager.

2008: The Brewers name Ken Macha manager.

2013: The Red Sox defeat the Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6 to win the World Series. It was the first time since 1918 they clinched a World Series at Fenway Park.
