Trade Watch

The alternative is signing a free agent at market rate who is going to be around Braun's age. It's pretty much impossible to find middle of the order hitters in their primes unless you develop your own or some team as moronic as Arizona trades you them.

I am curious which guys could become available. Would the Indians entertain the idea of trading Brantley? Pirates and Polanco/Marte? There's not a lot of obvious candidates.

Well, you have a point. I guess I'm holding out hope for lightning to strike twice there.

We might be better off doing a slightly higher grade of dumpster-diving for a guy with injury issues or a pronounced platoon split or something. Or just suck it up and trade some pitching for a young guy from a team deeper in positional talent, like the Sox or Pirates. I dunno, really . . . but Braun scares me. I guess Uggla/BJ have me gun-shy.

I'd be shocked if we signed a longterm FA that's a position player. That market is terribly weak. We have a stupid amount of pitching depth with a good amount of up the middle depth. I believe we make an impact trade this offseason. Wood, Jace/Peraza and a 12-15ish prospect could net us a great 3b or LFer.

Guess we could go after Todd Frazier, who is similar to Donaldson. But he doesn't have much control left.

What about Carlos Gonzalez? Braves could easily absorb all of his remaining contract (could even also take De La Rosa) and Colorado may be on the verge of a full-fledged rebuild if Tulo goes.

He might actually be broken. He looks completely lost at the plate. All those injuries might be catching up to him.

What about Tulowitski and play him at 3B?

If Colorado kicked in $30-50MM it would certainly be an interesting proposition. Tulo did say last year that he would retire before playing anywhere else but SS, though.

He'd be great if he had an extra year or two of control but getting him for between now and the end of 2016 probably wouldn't be worth what we would have to give up.

The Dodgers might be a good trading partner for us. They have a surplus at 3B and OF. Alex Guerrero and Scott Van Slyke are interesting RH hitters.

They also have bad contracts we could tangle with in any deal to lessen the prospect blow: Ethier, Crawford, Arruebarrena.

The Braves should NOT be taking on other teams bad contracts. We are not a rich team. We should be using every dollar we have wisely. We have a minimum we have to be at or around, and then anything else shouldn't be wasted, it's a gift to get quality players. We just gutted our major league roster for prospects, traded the best closer of our era so someone would take BJ, why take on another immovable contract.

Braves should hold fast this year, no reason to make a move. Sell off as many 1 year guys as possible. Then start making moves in the offseason.

Completely agree we shouldn't waste money, but I don't see how assuming short to medium term bad contracts in order to acquire young talent is wasting money. In my view, that approach is less risky / wasteful than signing big-name free agents.

Takes two to tango.

Brantley is signed on a team-friendly deal, as is Marte and some others.

FA market doesnt look so hot in 2017. Jay Bruce is about the only decent option and he has a team-friendly option that will probably get picked up. In terms of outfielders.

If they can shed some payroll by the deadline, makes sense to go after some hitters this winter like Wieters, and Justin or Ces.

Not against going after an ace either, pretty nice market although they will be expensive and some will re-sign with their respective teams.

Guys like Cueto, Zimmerman, possibly Greinke but he'll be 32 and LA may just re-sign him anyway, i think Detroit keeps Price after letting Scherzer go.
