TUESDAY'S MINORS FINAL 7/13/21; Shuster shines; is Touki ready?

MOVES OLD AND NEW

Gwinnett: activates Demeritte from IL.

Mississippi: Closer Indigo Diaz promoted from Rome; C Hendrik Clementina activated; LHP Chris Nunn released.

Stupid me: I missed that the Braves shipped AJ Graffanino and Greg Cullen to Orioles as the "player to be named" in the deal for the quickly forgotten Tommy Milone. That's the same Milone who made three starts for Atlanta last year and who was released the day the regular season ended along with his 14.90 ERA.

The minors used to not play during the All-Star game, but I guess that has changed with the 6 days on/1 day off framework being employed in most leagues this year.

Touki had a decent night. 6 innings while giving up only two runs. However, he walked 3 and had a HBP.

Shuster looks ready to advance.

Graffanino looked good a couple of years ago as a college kid in Rome. I hate that he fell off after that.

Waters' strikeout in his third PA came on a questionable call - breaking ball at the very top of the zone that the Ump called a strike.

Touki may have had a decent night, but was perfect through three innings and then completely lost the strike zone to start the fourth - walked 2 of the first 3 hitters, and was incredibly lucky to escape after only giving up one run. An MLB level offense would likely have hung a crooked number larger than 2 on him and gotten him out of the game at that point. Then he grooved the first pitch of the fifth and it got hammered. He pretty much followed the script we're used to from him - pretty good or better the first time through, not so much the second time when hitters don't swing when he's bouncing the breaking ball three feet in front of the plate, fielders better be rested the third time through because they're going to get their running in. I love Touki's stuff, but he's a once-through the order Pitcher at best at the major league level, and if you want to maximize his impact he needs to be a Closer or set up guy - with the two nasty breaking balls he has, he's almost impossible to hit when you don't get extended looks at him.

I think we should all be out on him as a starter. I think he should be in the ATL pen now and focusing on that.

I still worry that Shuster is being really babied on his innings and pitches. I hope he doesn't have some sort of baseline injury. As good as he has been I'd like to see him go deeper and turn lineups over before promotion.

That said, with college guys I really don't care unless they do something at the AA level or better.

I'm not worried about Shuster, but I have the same impression on how he's being handled. It's curious that they are being more careful with Shuster than with Strider (who did have major arm surgery while at Clemson). They've clearly been aggressive with Strider and Elder. Elder I understand because even though his perceived ceiling is lower, he's probably closer to a finished product than either Shuster or Strider.

Toussaint's biggest issue (at least to me) remains the same. For some reason, he can be sailing along and then all of a sudden lose command. For that reason, I can't take him seriously as a possible starting pitcher (at least at this point). His raw stuff is always going to be tantalizing, but I'd start trying to distill that into being a dynamic one-inning guy.
