What does a decision require?

A.J. Minter has worked in 11 games, 10 of them as he has worked his way back, one inning each time, working his way from Rome to Gwinnett. Here are his numbers:

June 12 with Florida:

One inning, no hits, no walks, 3 strikeouts

June 16 with Rome:

One inning, one hit, no walks, 1 strikeout

June 19 with Florida

One inning, one hit (a solo homer), no walks, 2 strikeouts

June 21 with Florida

One inning, one hit, no walks, one strikeout

June 24 with Florida

One inning, one hit, no walks, one strikeout

June 28 with Mississippi

One inning, one hit, one walk, two strikeouts

June 30 with Mississippi

One inning, no hits, one walk, no strikeouts

July 2 with Mississippi

One inning, no hits, no walks, one strikeout

July 5 with Gwinnett

One inning, one hit, one walk, one run, one strikeout

July 7 with Gwinnett

One inning, no hits, no walks, one strikeout

Total (including April appearance)

11 games, 11 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 15 strikeouts

His next appearance should be with the big club, period.

If you are going with an 8 man pen you should manage as if you have an 8 man pen. Having 8 relievers should allow a manager to minimize the number of times someone has to pitch back to back games. If Minter gets called up, he would not be the only reliever on the roster who has issues with back to back games. But an 8 man pen is designed in part to allow the team to carry those kinds of relievers.

If you have an 8-man pen, why are 3 of your 8 pitchers sitting "idle" for 3 days in a row when two of them have been close games? This is what wears certain pitchers out and what kills me about old man Snitker. Morris, Jackson, and Brothers haven't seen action since Tuesday or further back.

I realize Morris wasn't here for Wednesday, but he could've been used Thursday or Friday. Ramirez threw 20+ pitches and Johnson three 19+ pitches in both Nationals games. Thus, they are both likely out for today's game against Washington. With Viz on the DL, who in the world does old man Snitker throw in the 7th/8th/9th innings today if Atlanta leads Washington 1-0 or 2-1?

If some high leverage situations arise in today's game, he has to go with some of the other guys. Freeman has pitched 3 straight days and probably won't be available either. It is not such a bad thing imo to give more high leverage opportunities to Motte, Brothers and Kohl. I have less confident in Jackson and Morris. I'd rather have two of Minter, Peterson and Hursh in place of Jackson and Morris on the major league team.

I want Minter and Winkler to stay as far away from Atlanta until Game7 is gone. He is death to a good reliever.

I agree though I think 70 wins or more gets Snitker a contract extension. I hope I'm wrong. I want to see my favorite team win but not to help our the current incompetent management.

I really wish we would try some of these guys so we can rotate the higher-leverage relievers some, and not have to use them in low-lev situations.

Neither of them has reached the form they showed last year. I'd rather wait for them to reach it or something close to it before calling them up.

As for Snit, he's actually been fairly careful not to abuse relievers the way Gearrin and Venters were. What he has not been sensitive to is the fact that Johnson's effectiveness falls off quite a bit when used on consecutive days. He needs to have Johnson on a shorter leash on those occasions.

I agree.. I think when you don't have that one shut down guy, then you use your pen like an open audition. I wouldn't have minded if Krol or Freeman faced Harper in the 9th. I think JJ threw 20 pitches the night before and his stuff was high.. You could tell after 2 batters he was not on.

It was more the walk to Zimmerman that indicated Johnson didn't have it. So bring in Krol or Freeman to face Murphy.

I agree, although JJ has blown even after 2 days rest. I think JJ needs to be on a shorter lease regardless. The pen arms as a whole are not horrendous and should be leveraged better to ensure you don't have a day like today where you don't have JJ, Jose, or Freeman most likely.

yeah, my statement was all over the place. I thought to start the inning, before his meltdown.. but yes, once he walked Zimm on 5 pitches.. he should gone with the lefty.

after using one of Freeman/Krol against Murphy he would still have Motte and the remaining one of Freeman/Krol to get the best matchups to get through the rest of the ninth. Of course, there are some who have been using the Game 7 nickname who would have gone nuts if he did that. But I think that's what the situation called for once Johnson allowed Harper and Zimmerman to get on base.

I am more of Game7 when he uses his big 4 over and over or when he uses 4 pitchers in the 7 to get 3 guys out.

If the goal is to continue to lose games to get another high draft pick, why in the world would anyone want to improve the pen???

Calling Minter up now would mean we wouldn't control him until he was 40. Best to hold off on promotions for him, Albies, Acuna, Wright, Allard, Soroka, and others until Maitan and Severino are ready.

Maybe you could write an informative blog post about you opinions on maximizing asset value for mid market teams?

I'm sure it will be hard to fit in the time between showing double wides to toothless rednecks.
