Williams Perez

Playing the Waiting Game
Let me start by saying I am not bashing or degrading Perez or what he's done so far in his brief Major League career. With that being said...

I just have a feeling he's a ticking time bomb..

To say he's been lucky is an understatement. He currently has a 1.58 WHIP and (I would assume) a very high stranded runner %. I would like to see them bring up Wisler or even give Cody Martin a look as a starter.

Anyone else feel the same in regard to Perez?

I know they like him. I think he's ok and plays with fire way too much. I don't think the Braves will do anything with him.

I like him. I think Roger can help him learn how to pitch and not get behind. I love the way he attacks hitters. Definitely a pitch to contact guy.

I like Perez and he pitched another very good game tonight, he has a 1.80 ERA as a starter so far. That won't last but I still think he'll be a solid 5th starter or better if he can cut the walks a bit.

Yeah I had written Perez off as a AAAA pitcher and every start he doesnt implode I am thankful for. So long as he is pitching well I see no reason to remove him from the rotation. We have seen our share of fluky good years from random starters over the years. I will say this about Perez though you can get away with a lot if you get a lot of groundballs with a great infield defense.

Exactly. It seems to me some here are being very hard on him considering how effective he's been starting for us.

He's been a blessing sent from God. With guys like him you are just happy if they help you win games.

But what he's doing isn't sustainable with a 1.50 WHIP. You can like him while being pessimistic about him moving forward.

I think his minor league walk rate should be given more weight given the small number of major league innings pitched. The last two years his walk rate in the minors has been under 3.

Agreed. His walk rate should decrease. If he can maintain a 55-60% GB rate then I like him long term. He's got pretty good stuff.

I agree. Here's his numbers starting for us after tonight:

RK Player Team W L ERA▲ G GS SV SVO IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG WHIP
1 Perez, W ATL 2 0 1.80 5 5 0 0 30.0 26 7 6 1 13 27 .232 1.30

Even with his walk rate he's still at a 3.88 FIP. Limiting homeruns and getting lots of groundballs with help, especially with our infield defense.

By big concern with him his that he is an extremely high effort pitcher.

I do like his stuff for the most part though...gets a ton of movement.

Like I said with my very first statement on this post, I am in no way bashing or degrading his season so far -I am actually quite impressed and very thankful for what he's done thus far- I am just concerned that he can't sustain success by putting/letting that many baserunners on the base paths per game.
