Braves trade for Chris Sale - Grissom going to Red Sox (Extension through 26 at 18M)

Question becomes how many pitchers are we going to keep on roster if that happens.
By the end of the year 1 or 2 pitchers are going to be hurt. Hopefully everyone is healthy and if we need to move Elder during the trade deadline is the perfect opportunity.

It’s not completely outlandish to compare Sale to Hamels because the realistic worse case scenario for Sale is that he throws a total of 0 innings for the Braves. He is a walking injury list, and it’s wise to acknowledge that possibility.

However, this is virtually the same scenario as Glasnow to the dodgers. Nobody is counting on Sale for 150 innings, just like nobody is counting on Glasnow for any bulk innings. Sale and Glasnow are on the best teams in the sport for one reason, and one reason only: to strike out 10+ batters in 2-3 games in October. Nothing more. That is what WS favorites are looking for, and that’s what they got.

Was that worth Grissom? I suspect Braves fans overrate him considering he is nothing more than a light hitting 2B with nowhere to play on this roster, but again, Sale not being acquired for his 2024 WAR…is he being acquired for 2-3 starts in October, and those games are worth much more than bulk regular season innings for true WS contenders like the Braves.

Sale, Kelenic and Lopez for Grissom and spare parts makes this a good offseason for AA. It’s a solid B+ now that can become an A- with the acquisition of a legit RHH 4th OFer.

Terrific take. The Glasnow comparison is absolutely spot on. If Sale is healthy in October, the rotation could be absolutely lethal.

I mean I get what you're saying for sure... but 200 innings is turning into a rare thing... only 5 pitchers had over 200 innings in 2023 and the highest was only 216 (Logan Webb).

For sure, 200 innings is a bit arbitrary. But it was what he used to regularly do (and probably why he had injury issues later)

I mean in the end I'll take any pre-covid year Sale season.

Joke of a trade...we may get about 10 starts outta him before he gets hurts at the fckn pregame meal...You all keep saying he's "here for October" but his fragile ass won't make it to October. I think AA owed O'Halloran a favor or something.

I like the risk here, hate losing Vaughn but he has nowhere to play with Arcia at SS, Kelenic at LF. His best value was unfortunately as trade bait. For Sale, i think you NBA style load manage him and hope he and Morton are ready to roll by the time the playoffs start. We have more than enough depth with Lopez, Ynoa, AJSS, Winans, Vines to cover for them during the regular season.

Best part of the Sale deal is it didnt cost Waldrep or AJSS, who AA seems to really value greatly. We're gonna need a couple of these SP prospects to hit with Sale, Morton, Fried on the outs soon.

Once again, AA came up with a great deal that none of us had even considered.

Why would we be surprised?

I mean, i thought of Sale as an option. But wasnt sure he was available. We also kept our pitching prospects/depth, and only traded Grissom. So we really just need a RH OF'er, to go with Kelenic now.

I just saw this deal and I was like 'What? isn't he injured?" Then after looking at all the details, plus the money, I really like this deal. He's going to hurt, but hopefully not for, or just before the playoffs. That's the only risk, but for $10 mil deferred, it's worth it. The great thing is we're playing from a stacked deck where we can get by with 5th starters for awhile and let the offense win some games. We don't NEED him for the regular season because the offense and bullpen can win games.

This is an excellent example of a response from someone completely unable to process any form of nuance in any discussion about any topic.

Needless to say, a guy doesn’t have to be healthy all season to be available in October.

The way the Dodgers handle Glasnow and the way the Braves handle Sale will be similar. Except the Dodgers goofed up and gave him a 5 year deal.
