Braves trade for Chris Sale - Grissom going to Red Sox (Extension through 26 at 18M)

Looks like the Braves are at $270 and the 3rd level is $277. Assuming the goal is to stay under that level they have $7 left for a 4th OFer and mid-season acquisitions.

If we had a need emerge and had to go out and acquire a pitcher or position player at the deadline who is making a salary of $20 million, how much would count? Either way, $7 million isn't much to work with if we're talking about true impact acquisitions mid-season. If we were wanting to stay under the 277, seems we'd need to find a salary to unload to give us more flexibility that we might need if there's a significant injury or two.

I imagine the powder will be left for the trade deadline where a possible impact player might be available.

Never thought I'd see the teams playroll explode like this.

It's going to be someone that hasn't hit FA yet like a Burnes if that player is acquired. Impact talent but well below market rates.

I guess we'll have to go the super cheap route for the fourth OF. We can't have Forrest Wall as the first outfielder off the bench for an extended period of time. Gotta be another one coming unless AA pulls something out of his ass like another shortstop that gives Arcia some occasional LF time.

Also, reading Sale's comments to reporters today, AA finally got a trade and extension for a pitcher who "grew up a Braves fan." Just wasn't the one we were speculating earlier in the offseason.

But we don't have much to do. Unless we need Bader money for a 200 AB 4th outfielder. I'd offer Pillar again. He's adequate. And presumably cheap.

I feel like I remember a lot of Sale chatter all over the Braves echo chamber a few years ago. Like everyone thought he would be traded to the Braves for precisely these reasons.

Not sure if it's been set yet but MLBTR estimates he'll get 15.1 this year. So his cost would be 5-6 million if acquired at the deadline.

Do we know for sure how the number is calculated for guy with more than 2 months of control left?

For example, when a guy gets traded with 2 years of control his new CBT number is the remainder of his guarantee divided by 2. If a guy controlled for 1 year and 2 months gets traded at the deadline, does the number get calculated in a similar manner? Like the total remaining guaranteed divided by 1.3?

I never thought I’d be worrying about cap numbers for the Braves. It’s crazy how much cash this team has now.

I just doubt that AA/his boss will let the 277 cap and the possibility of getting docked a draft position stand in the way of getting someone who could help us win another World Series in what will almost certainly be Fried's last season here if the need arises and we have an opportunity to get someone who is going to push us over the 277.

Perhaps the new deal removes any incentives from Sale to try to hit certain targets to get the option to vest. So that he doesn't get pissed when we limit him to 15-20 starts in order to have him fresh for October.

Makes a lot of sense, and something I mentioned would be interesting how the Braves would navigate. Can't imagine the MLBPA would take kindly to the Braves skipping starts or limiting innings for Sale if he is pitching really well. This ends that discussion.

The goal of this deal, was to get 1% of it into the hands of the Atlanta Braves Foundation.

If you get everyone on the 26 man roster to give 1% back to the Braves Foundation, then you are getting back 26% of what you spent on the roster. 4D Chess.

No idea. I'm sure we'll get plenty of articles about at when the trade deadline approaches.

I doubt we spend hardly any money to bring in anyone of note. Whatever 4th OFer we might bring in will be a minor league deal type of guy to compete with Wall and provide organizational depth. Probably someone like AJ Pollock
