Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

It's been reported that Stroman wanted to go to the Yankees. So not sure that we could have got him for the same deal. Hader is probably going to take a 5 year commitment and cost us draft picks. I don't know Verdugos service time but I am gonna guess we have several more years of Kelenic.

It’s a fair argument- but let’s see what Hader fetches first ….

(Hopefully 2 for 45 with two club options for ATL)

Verdugo has one year left. The big thing with Kelenic is the years of control. If he hits he solves a need for the forseeable future instead of having to figure out LF every year or two.

Not sure how Stroman's contract is structured but if it's equal over the two years Stroman/Verdugo are costing 27.2 million in 2024.

I've seen reports that the cost for Kelenic with all the trade shennanigans came out to 15-17 million for 2024. IIRC Sale is practically free in 2024 but did cost Grissom. I'd say Sale/JK pretty much equal Stroman/Verdugo in resources. Braves have the riskier bet but the higher upside in both players.

What a weird move at his age. Good grief I hope he doesn’t make the team because we all know twit will use him against the middle of the order in the 5th inning of a tie game with the bases loaded because the high leverage guys are on hold until least the 6th.

Looks like converting elite-velocity relievers back to starting is this off-season’s market inefficiency, with Anthopoulos’ old colleague Zaidi following suit, signing Jordan Hicks to 4/$44m and announcing the intention to stretch him out à la Reynaldo Lopez. Makes sense, given the high price of starting pitching, but still interesting to see.

Lopez, Hicks, Culberson…

Pitchers are starting to blur the lines between 5+ inning SPs an 1 inning BP guys. Hopefully Snit is up to the task in managing guys like Lopez who can probably face 6-10 batters over 2-3 innings every 3 days.

Looks like the market for Blake Snell has collapsed a good bit- he May wind up in Anaheim. Wonder how he feels about his agent trying to get a ransom out of SF and the Yanks now ……
I read that neither are pursuing him anymore - that the ask was way too high.

Obviously the Japanese guys damaged his chances at getting the absurd deal he was seeking….

Glad we didn’t do something stupid there - and as Cheff posted above - the trend of using the BP guys has become a real thing.

It will be a cold day in hell before the Yankees lose interest in a high priced player with huge red flags. I think Snell really wants to stay on the West Coast which limits his options.

Yeah- I agree- the article I read said the two sides were way off and that essentially NY said to kick rocks and moved on.

But like you said, cold day in hell

If I could run a team I would look at using a rotation of 3 pitchers pitching 3 innings every 3 days. That would require only 9 pitchers. I think there plenty of pitchers who are good enough to go multiple innings but not good enough to go 5+ innings. I would try to alternate righty/lefty and focus on getting pitchers with varying release points. Hitters getting used to release points is part of the reason pitchers struggle after multiple turns through the lineup.

I hear ya… but given Manfreds comments about the decline of dominant starters, I suspect that a few teams using that strategy would fairly quickly result in rule changes.

Baseball Prospects prospect rankings out today behind a paywall so I won't link to it. AJ Smith-Shawver not listed at all, but Hurston Waldrep is 30 and Ignacio Alvarez is 98. Cool to see Alvarez on a list.

They had no issue with rushing Grissom a bit and my guess is they'll push Alvarez to AA right out of the gate. If anyone on the IF goes down, he's probably the guy who will come up provided he shows well in AA. I haven't read much about his defense, but his offensive profile looks good right now and if power develops with more experience, he could be something.
