They never had the numbers to pull such a stunt. No strategy, which was made clear as soon as Gaetz endorsed Scalise.

McCarthy was no good. But he was at least beholden to a very slim majority and support for the job. He negotiated the 72 hour rule, which Johnson is abandoning. As well as the 1% automatic spending cuts - which Johnson is forfeiting. Not mentioning the fact that McCarthy was a force in fundraising.

Not saying Johnson is a bad guy or McCarthy is good. But there was no upgrade here. And they wounded themselves badly in the process.
 
No Republican speaker can win because the crazies control the party. If they can't be in power they want to not fund it causing a shutdown until they get the Presidency. They think the public will blame Biden for not giving them everything they want rather than blame Republicans for acting like toddlers at a store when their momma won't buy them a candy bar. House Republicans know that's a recipe to get slaughtered in the next election and that leaves them in an impossible situation.

Thats why they are quitting. Their entire idealogy has been co-opted to mean "kisses Trumps ass". And by that standard they sure as hell are RINOs. They have always been the same person. They didnt change. The Republican party changed making them RINOs by the crazy standard. They arent really RINOs they are just not MAGA cult members. I dont even need to look it up to know that all them have voted with Republicans over 90% of the time. But that aint good enough. May as well be Democrats to vote the Republican party line over 90% of the time.
