GDT 7/28: Lopez and a Sunday Special that would make Bobby Blush

What a joke this season has become

I mean it was always gonna be some games like this to protect fried, sale, and Lopez who shouldn't be pitching a ton of innings, right? Now you add in SS who hasn't pitched that many innings as a pro.

I don't know if it's the front office calling the shots or the guys in the dugout, but I entered the season with the impression that one of the primary goals was to protect starters' arms, especially Sale and Lopez. I guess that went out the window.

It was known that one of the rookie pitchers was going to have to step up. With Fried, Sale and Lopez all injury risk/treat with white gloves.. some innings were going to have to be picked up. Swelly did that nicely.. AJSS fell flat and Waldrep looked awful. The later two even went down with injuries of their own. Elder was still there to pick up slack. What wasn't known was that Strider was going to go down on top of these three being babied. Then you lose a good long man (Kerr) because of some dumbass thought to make him a starter and push him past 60+ pitches.. And now they get to make the same mistake with Holmes because we all know Twit doesn't comprehend situations well on the fly and will probably lose track of pitch count because Holmes is 'cruising' and he might be able to get him through 5 innings.

On top of that the conditioning staff is offering donuts in place of stretching

If Lopez is done, we need a rotation upgrade. Doesn't have to necessarily be a stud like Crochet, but we need a reliable pitcher capable of starting playoff games. Jack Flaherty would be my preference in this scenario, depending on prospect cost.

Whether or not Lopez is ok or we acquire his replacement, we need a true 6 man rotation from here on out to save everyone's arm for the post-season. Rotate out Elder and AJSS for that 6th spot the rest of the season. Maybe one of Anderson, Ynoa, or Waldrep can get back on track and provide some innings too.

Either way, I never want to see Winnans, Vines, or Dodd make a start the rest of the season in Atlanta.

yeah, I thought they were doing ok with trying to protect them, but Lopez probably should have been treated a little more carefully than Sale. Making Lopez an opener (in hind sight) probably protects his arm better. He should be around 60 innings right now, not 100+

I would like to see AJSS up. We need a true 6 man rotation from here on out, regardless of the status Lopez. Rotate out Elder and AJSS the rest of the season. Maybe one of Anderson, Ynoa, or Waldrep can get back on track and provide some innings.

rest of season... ever is more like it. although, vines always sort of intrigued me a little for some reason. I don't see starter, but wonder if he could be an opener/long man one day.

I don't care if they want to try Winnans, Dodd, or Vines in the BP. They seem to have just good enough stuff that they could be effective relievers. But they quite clearly are not major caliber Starting pitchers. Trotting any of them out for 3+ innings is virtually guaranteeing to give up 4+ runs.

Looking at some Savant data.. Winans is by far the better of the 3. His Slider/change/sinker all seem to be ok if used properly and he doesn't walk the world.. Having him balls out for 2-3 innings could be of some value. Vines also as a cutter/change/slider guy could be alright. Dodd.. I just don't see any pitches that will work at this time. No data for him in 24.

And here we go.. Vines called up.. Assuming he will be used to fill some innings tonight.. please twit.. please don't throw him more than 3 unless it is out of hand on either side.
