After the Atlantic ran the story the AP ran a story in which it cited confirmation from "one senior official from the U.S. Department of Defense" and "one senior Marine Corps officer." They confirmed the remarks reported in the Atlantic. According to the AP, the Department of Defense official had "firsthand knowledge" of the remarks while the Marine Corps officer had been told about them.
