What’s the 2000’s version of ‘The Godfather’

**NOT ACTUALLY RACIST
What’s the highest quality guys movie over the last 25 years?

Gladiator?
Dark Knight?

The Departed isn’t original, so that counts against it.

Are we limiting it to the 2000-2009? Or going all out?

If we're going since 2000 some winners I see

Get Out
Zodiac
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood (maybe the single greatest acting performance of our lifetime)

You have film nerd favorites in Moonlight and Boyhood and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting that could be remembered well, but I don't think sold enough to still be talked about.

My personal pick would be Interstellar, it's still my favorite movie, but I know not everyone universally loves it.

I think what knocks out blockbuster films is the Godfather wasn't a blockbuster, which is why Get Out was the first thought I had, small budget film that grossed a ton.But I realize that's not the modern movie genre. Like I think the average person wouldn't love the Godfather, you have to really love movies.

I appreciate your response but you have a weird take in movies. No one will ever compare Get out, boyhood or that other stuff to The Godfather. Those aren’t even dude movies.

The Godfather 1 and 2 are classics.

The Last Samurai was excellent
The Departed was very solid. I didn’t love it though. Same gangster vein though.
Black Hawk down is one of my all time favorites with an absolutely loaded cast.
Not the most amazing film of all time but I saw Kingdom of Heaven in the theater and loved the experience. It was a great theater movie.

It's probably Gladiator. That movie just holds up so well.

Gangs of New York is definitely up there as well.

Blow

American Gangster

Dune remake was amazing

Bourne Identity

Training Day

Get Out I suspect will have really long legs. It's still talked about now nearly a decade after it's release. It was a low budget film that made a killing at the box office. It's also exceptionally crafted and universally loved by audiences and critics.

Godfather and older Spielberg and Lucas films were all in that same indie vein that struck a chord with audiences. Gladiator is a huge budget movie by a big name director starring a big name actor in the prime of his career. The biggest name on the Godfather was Brando who studios didn't want to hire because he was a set liability. If you went for a lesser known (at the time) director who had some budget, something like Arrival or the Prestige could be similar films though I don't quite think they're up to that standard.

I do believe that's why I go with Zodiac, Gyllenhaal wasn't a huge name yet, Ruffalo wasn't a huge name yet, Fincher wasn't a huge name yet, the biggest name on the project was RDJ who was considered a huge risk because of his drug problems.

Get Out was good. Not anywhere close to being among my top 10. But it was good.

Honestly I feel like Captain America and the Winter Soldier should be nearly as high at TDK. Just a fantastic movie overall. But ultimately, Ledger's acting as the Joker was legendary and put's it over the top.

A couple movies I missed were The King's Speech and Pan's Labyrinth. There aren't a lot of comedies that hold up against all time great films, but O' Brother Where Art Thou has got to rank towards the top too.

I loathe the King's Speech. It's incredibly well acted, but it's so ****ing boring.Again, incredibly well acted. But Tom Hooper is a **** director.

I forgot to include Pan's Labrinth in my film nerd section. Film nerds love that movie.

George RR Martin claims there’s a adaption in development of Elden Ring and I think Guillermo Del Toro is the only guy that could make that work (just replicate Pan’s Labrynth).

I think The Social Network is the defining movie of my generation.

Ehh, it's a really good movie, but for me it isn't that elite. Though I get why people like it. Sorkin is too wordy for me.

I also realize that I forgot about the Departed, I don't know why, I jsut spaced it probably thought it was earlier than it was.

Also forgot about Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, because for some reason I forgot to count later decades even though I included Get Out. Also I mean we'll see if it sticks around but Oppenheimer could be it too.

I really hope if that's the case they simplify the names. I have played 200 hours in that game and I mean Marika, Melina, Miquella, Melenia, Maliketh, Margit, Morgott, Milicent, Mohg, Godefroy, Godfrey, Godrick, Godwyn, Rellana, Rennala, Rodrick, Rickard, Radagon, Ranni. Like I legit forget who's who all the time. Like just pick a few of the Demigods and go with different names.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not even my favorite Fincher (Zodiac is his best). I ranked it high because of how Fincher nailed the dangers of social media when it was still in its honeymoon phase. It’s Sorkin’s best script too.

I agree with zodiac is his best. I forgot how good it was until I watched it during the pandemic.

Fincher is one of those directors who I never will hate, he always nails the mood and look.

Also just realized I forgot Kill Bill came out in the 2000s. That's probably really the right answer. Though it didn't win oscars, it's probably the most important film(s) of the last 24 years.

Lord of the Rings is 9 hours of amazing movies. The Godfather series can't make a claim to that. As time goes by, LOTR gets more and more impressive.

LOTR is a fairly niche fanbase. I mean it's got a huge following, but it's more akin to Star Wars than something like The Godfather.
