DH strategy tomorrow

The optics of not starting Sale in game 2 would be pretty bad if we didn't win.

Absolute worst case if you have to use Sale, we'd still have Fried, Lopez, and i guess Morton in a Game 3? Could be worse.

Again, the Mets aren't dumb. If they win game 1, a loss is waaaayyyy more beneficial than a win. At brewers is way more desirable. I don't see any way they actually try to win game 2

I guess there's at least 1 upside if sale pitches tomorrow. If we somehow win WC, he's go game 1 and another in divisional series

Mets have to play a DH tomorrow, and if they win 1 game, they have to play in Milwaukee at 430 central Tuesday. Damn

Isn't there a new rule this year, where teams can't use position players to pitch unless it's a blowout.

The winner should petition to concede game 2.

You could use your worst bullpen arm to throw BP meatballs and any ground ball or pop fly is an error and mix in a bunch of walks and make it a blowout in the first inning …..

But any of the above discussed mess would put the baseball gods on you worse than a hex from Marie Laveau…..

The optimal strategy is to use SS in game one and win. Then use Elder in game two and win that and end their miserable season.

So my favorite story.

Some of you may remember my having told this before….

It was late September in 1999. The Braves had clinched a good week prior. The Mets had to win to get in. It was the last game of the season.

We were playing at old Mets stadium out in queens. My girlfriend at the time - later became my wife - had graduated the previous May from NYU grad school and still had lots of friends in the city -and she took me up there for the weekend - including a surprise trip to Shea stadium to watch the Braves play.

The Braves have the Bobby Cox meaningless game special lineup on the field but I didn’t mind.

Shea was ROCKING. The Mets were about to grab a wildcard spot. All they had to do was win against our scrubs.

They led the entire game. Until the ninth inning -with two outs, the Braves got a runner on and pitchers’ spot was up…… off the bench came the pinch hitter - and the crowd was so loud you couldn’t hear your self think.

Now, I’m sitting in the upper deck in the outfield with big, drunk, mean looking Mets fans all around. Needless to say, I am not openly telling for the Braves less I get killed…..

Anyway - Shea is rocking and the chants are pouring down as the most hated Brave of all time is in to pinch hit “Larry, Larry…”

Then, the crack of the bat. There is total silence as the ball goes over the apple and just like that the Braves have the lead and the Mets know they are gonna lose, and are out of the playoffs.

You coulda’ heard a pin drop …. Except for one sound : this cute little blonde girl with a thick southern accent was standing on her chair doing the tomahawk chop as loud as she could.

The hatred in the eyes of that crowd was something I’ll never forget.

I thought, “if we get out here alive, I’m marrying her.”

I’m not sure teams think like that. At least the ones in the clubhouse. Mets will probably put the B team on the field in game 2, but you can bet your ass those players will be playing to succeed.

Maybe so, but what pitchers will they use in a totally meaningless game with a playoff series in 24 hours?
