GDT 10/1/24 - Braves @ Padres - AJSS for WC Game 1

This might be the least mad I have ever been after a game 1 loss. I cant help but be highly disappointed in AJSS. I trust the Braves evaluators. There was a reason he wasnt brought up when we needed SP. I think am okay if we make a big trade using him. I think I was wrong about needing a SP this offseason.

You also forgot soler. Hell, even laureano is a career .749 ops, and he was at .748 this season. This lineup shouldn't be this bad, and since it is, someone should pay

Eh, I don't classify either Soler or Laureano as "good" hitters. They aren't terrible obviously, but both have been very up and down over their careers. We pulled Laureano off waivers afterall.

The Braves have had a top 5 offense in the NL basically every year Seitzer has been the hitting coach, save for this year. I think people are letting one bad season compounded by injury to shape their opinion. I think he deserves the BOD.

We are definitely gonna need one and a good one. Strider coming back from injury and even though Sale had a CY year i still dont trust him to stay healthy (missing the biggest game of the year last night) and losing Fried and Morton. Yeah we need another really good SP in the offseason imo.

no his collection of work in the minors as well as his starts at the major league level.

I know he is 'working' on things so his 2+ homers per 9, his 4+ BB/9, his 1.2 whip over the past two years don't really count.. all should be easily fixed when he doesn't tip pitches and learns how to throw strikes and doesn't give up homers every game. I mean he can throw 98 every so often, so the Braves should keep him for sure.

You literally said he has now jumped Waldrep as players you would trade to dump Soler or Murphy.

That infers you did not feel that way prior to yesterday. So you are in fact letting 1 start warp your view of him. 1 playoff start as 21 year old injury fill-in no less. 72 hours ago he was likely preparing for the off-season, may be planning a golf or a fishing trip. Then he was thrust into game 1 starter of the Wild Card series seemingly overnight.

I'm with you on the feeling of not being mad after that loss. It was totally expected, and i literally had no expectation this team was going to win this round, especially once Sale went down. I was hoping they'd reach the playoffs and they did, no expectations beyond that. It's been a very frustrating season and in a way, I won't be sad to see it end.

yes, before last night I wasn't sure. I didn't mind if they used him, but I wanted to see this implied improved pitcher. This 'work in progress'.. I didn't see much of that. His pitch data tells the story. While not horrible, there was nothing that stood out as 'he has something'.. He throws a three pitch mix with nothing being outstanding, especially with his command.

Can he improve.. sure. But I think he has a reliever ceiling and that is something I don't mind trading away if it benefits the now.

if you want to hold on to the excuse that he was 21 and starting game 1 of the playoffs.. that is fine. I don't hold any ill will towards that feeling. But what I saw last night was no different than I saw his one start earlier, or any of his starts last year.. no improved spin.. no improved command .. Think I will pass on a RH Newk.

We honestly had the pitching this year even without Sale but it just didnt line up right. Lopez and Schwellenbach have been studs. Frieds been a little inconsistent but entering the playoffs not limited be recent injury for the first time in years. Thats as good as anyone else's 3. Its also a moot point if we dont score some damn runs.

They've made the playoffs every season under snit too. Does that mean we shouldn't upgrade him?

He's 21. Newk didn't make his first start until he was 24.

There is zero reason to be this far down on a 21 year old with his type of talent and who just started pitching his Junior year of high school..

Spencer Schwellenbach was closing out games and was the starting SS for Nebraska as the exact same age that AJSS is now.

Yeah, another starter is needed. Not saying they need to go out and shell out 200M's+ on Burnes, but need another guy. The current crop of 5th starters we have just arent good enough.

I am in this boat as well.. I won't lie and say I don't like when the Braves lose and I was hoping for a better showing than last night.. but I realistically understand that there is not enough talent on the roster to win. The bottom half of the lineup is god awful and pitchers can basically sleep walk through them.. Then if any of the top 4 or 5 are off, there is serious sequencing issues to navigate. Just too much to over come in my opinion.

Hopefully payroll won't be reduced and AA can really fix the holes that are there (some by his own doing).

I mean sure, is it Snit's fault we couldnt score a run. Managers cant make the hitters, hit. Pitching kept them in the game, offense just couldnt do anything, story of the season really.

Team might also be running out of gas, having to play every game like it's a playoff game down the stretch. Plus traveling across the country to SD.

I still like him. He just dropped from untradeable list. Schwellenbach is now in the "I'll slap you if you even suggest trading him" list.

Control is always my highest leverage point. I just don't trust guys who can't stop walking the world. There are exceptions, but in general, prospects that have higher walk rates tend to be on my 'I don't mind if they are traded' list. Usually younger guys like AJSS, I give the benefit of the doubt.. but seeing the data already.. I don't think I am all that interested in hoping he learns how to pitch type prospect. Him and Waldrep at this point can be traded without me being that upset. -- that is not to say, they won't develop...

I think we've become spoiled in the last 10 or so years or so with the amount of SP prospects we have developed that have found success almost immediately, and many at such a young age. Because of that, fans tend to give up on guys pretty quick. It took Fried over 3 years before he established himself as front of the rotation caliber pitcher. Folty and Wright both took awhile to develop, but turned into good starters at least briefly before injuries side tracked their careers.

No one's opinion on AJSS should have been affected by last night's performance. If anything, I think you should be impressed by his ability to settle down after that early 2 run shot in the biggest game of his life. As I said earlier in thread, a lesser pitcher would have "Folted" under that sort of pressure.

I’m sure everything will be chalked up to a season of to many injuries to over come and the coaching staff will be given one more season.
