GDT 10/2/24: Braves @ Padres - WC Game 2 - Gotta Win to Survive

Someone needs to get with Olson and tinker his swing back to 2023
Someone needs to get with Ozzie and make his just watch 1000 pitches a day until he can recognize them
Someone needs to get with Riley and fit him with armor
Someone needs to get with Murphy and make him sit in a sauna all winter so he likes hot weather. And get him off the meth
Someone need to get with Harris and tell him he came around but he can’t come back in round
Someone needs to get with asscia and tell him to go away
Someone needs to tell ozuna that there is no such thing as a 5 run homer and there is a right field
Someone needs to tell twit players can have days off just like pitchers
Someone needs to tell Ramon it is ok to walk occasionally.
Someone needs to tell fried thanks for the extra pick. Good luck.

AA has some big decisions to make. Do you keep both Soler and Ozuna? Acuna is gonna need to DH some whether he likes it or not.

I think I have changed my mind and am okay with the idea of trading Ozuna. We cant just assume he will be this good again. If someone is willing to pay us like he is then maybe we should take it. I think a lot of mid and low payroll teams would be interested if they dont already have a great DH. Watch them trade Ozuna then get back Benintindi from the White Sox in a trade for Crochet. Benintindi and Soler kind of split playing the field and DH with Laureano as the RH platoon for Benintinidi.

Trade him to a division rival so he can bop Murphy on the head with his swing and we won't have to watch his redneck ass anymore. two birds one stone.

Olson had a 144 RC in the second half. Literally our best hitter in the second half. Ozuna 143. He is already fixed its just his overall stats dragging him down because of a very slow first half. If this happened in reverse people would have called his stats to start the year a big hot streak. Difference is from last year not as many other people not pitching in.

We need to trade Murphy before he loses all value. He had 10+ War combined the previous 2 years. Someone will trade prospects to take that chance. If AA made any promises.... well if it aint in the contract then the other part of that deal was the player has to keep performing. We wont trade you..... a long as you arent a liability to the team. We could still get decent prospects for him and get out of that contract entirely. Another slow start and his value starts plummeting.

I think Harris just needs to get injured early in the year because once he comes back from injury he is awesome. Maybe its because they make him exercise when rehabbing his injuries. Who knows. Maybe someone needs to take one for the team and leave a bannana peel outside his door in spring training if you know what I mean.

Dont blame Arcia the Braves cant find a better replacement. If he was making 20 million a year I say yeah blame that mother ****er all day long. Dudes getting like pre-Arb money, he doing the best he can. All we can really ask for that price is to play good defense and hit a home run once in a while and he does that. Not his fault he is the best we got.

Twit says Acuna got almost the whole year off. He even gave Riley, Harris, and Ozzie extended breaks. Some of them multiple times. Yet you people are not satisfied.

Lauerano says you cant hit a home run when you walk.

And Fried is going to **** over some team so bad on his next contract. Glad its not us. Its like he is a double agent going into FA to **** with a NL rival from the inside.

Ozuna's contract is an option. And I don't see anyone really giving us anything of real value for Ozuna, as DHs not named Ohtani or Big Papi simply aren't that valuable. I find it unlikely we would pick up his option only to trade him. Either we pick up the option and he's here in 2025 or we decline it and run with Soler.

If we do pick up the option, Soler is likely gone as the odd man out. He would be a bit hard to trade, but we could either eat some money or do a contract swap for a position of need (Gray/Castillo/Correa).

We had better stay as far away from Benintendi as possible, even if Chicago basically gives us Crochet for free to take Benintendi. There are better ways to improve our rotation than to take on Benintendi's dead contract.

Unless we play to play ozuna in LF some next season, the decision is easy - you can have soler and Acuna every day, but you can't have Acuna and ozuna if ozuna can't play defense

I tend to agree. As good as Ozuna has been for us the last 2 years, him and Soler are redundant. Soler can actually play defense somewhat competently. He fits the team better than Ozuna,. and more importantly, he's hard to move with that contract. Ozuna seems like a prime candidate to regress as well with a .359 BABIP this year.

I am leaning towards letting Ozuna walk at this point and using his funds elsewhere.

I’d hate to let Ozuna walk bc his production and price are a bargain but Acuna is gonna have to DH some and Soler can at least play the field when he has to.

There is no multiverse where Ozuna's option is not picked up. That type of production on a 1 year deal is extremely valuable.

Acuna does not need to DH. He is most likely going to repeat his 2022 numbers...you know, the last time he came back from major knee surgery. Acuna needs to play 120-130 games, be rested often, and get his legs back under him. Acuna's goal for 2025 should be to survive a full season. It's highly unlikely his bat is so potent he bumps a guy who just put up back to back .900 OPS seasons from the lineup.

The idea that Ozuna won't be the DH next year is ludicrous.

I think a competent manager can manage the Ozuna/Soler/Acuna conundrum.

rule 1: Acuna is off every game before a team day off (giving him 2 days off in a row) (4th OF gets start)
rule 2: Soler plays RF/LF 70/80% of the time with defensive replacement coming in 7th on (4th OF gets other starts)
rule 3: Ozuna primary DH, but test him at first so Olson can have a few days off a month thus bumping Soler to DH and 4th OF gets a start
rule 4: Infield should be easier, especially if you replace Arcia with a better player. Arcia can sub SS and 3rd.. new short can sub 2nd base as well as playing majority SS with 2ish games off a month.
Rule 5: Always, Always look to get regulars games off the day before team day off. (Acuna is a hard stop, so only have to do infield)

This is not that difficult and it keeps bench active and team fresh.

You are absolutely correct. It shouldn't be as hard as it seemed in 2024 (and 2023 if one looks at that season). Only missing ingredient has been the lack of someone on the bench who can ably play shortstop. Arcia is cheap and if they can find an upgrade at the position, he would be an ideal utility player. I don't know if bumping him would cause problems in the clubhouse, but deep down Arcia has to realize he's playing on borrowed time. There will be options out there. It all depends on what the Braves are willing to spend and whether they can convince someone that Snitker's pattern of bench usage is slated to change.

Have you watched Soler play RF? He is flat-out terrible. He gave back all of his offensive value with his atrocious defense. If that‘s the argument for keeping Soler over Ozuna, it‘s a weak one.

Look, Ozuna needs some rest, too. He clearly broke down at the end of this season. He can DH for about 130 games, get one game off per week on average, and maybe make the occasional start in LF if it can‘t be avoided. Conversely, Acuna can start in RF for about 120 games, DH for 30, and get an additional ~10 games off.

Here is a simple chart I did in like 5 minutes. Anything like this would work and get plenty of playing time for you 4th OF as well as rest for the regulars. It could easily be scaled in any direction for any player depending on performance or matchups. You could also add Ramon in this mix and Cut JK out more.. making him more of the 5th OF.

I believe a Laureano and Kelenic bench would alleviate the OF/DH situation. They are good enough to be your late inning defensive sub for Soler and to give players a day off based on a platoon advantage.

I'm not serious, but a face-value argument can be made that Acuna deserves MVP votes simply because we saw what his absence meant to the Braves in 2024.
