GDT 10/2/24: Braves @ Padres - WC Game 2 - Gotta Win to Survive

Hader already on the phone with meth head talking about his special batch they can share this weekend.

I have a huge disdain for Murphy...I'm sure he's a good dude and it's not his fault that AA was fckn retarded enough to pay him that money, but just seeing him out there makes me sick. This will end up being worse than Kenshin Kawakami, Upton, and Mike Hampton combined. His acquisition and extension from

Start to finish was just absolutely egregious.

AA has some big decisions to make. Do you keep both Soler and Ozuna? Acuna is gonna need to DH some whether he likes it or not.

I don’t think you can. They’re both DH at this point and you can’t have more than one. Especially with Acuna’s injury history

It's simple - you can have soler and Acuna switch out at DH and rf. You can't with ozuna. Ozuna is gone.

Wouldn't be shocked if they just stick him in LF next year. 125 and and 119 WRC+ the last 2 years. If they can bring Ramon back for the bench that gives a righty and lefty option in Kelenic and Ramon to give the corner OF's a break in the OF from time to time and to sub in for Soler late in the game. If I knew Soler would give a ~120 WRC+ the next two years I'd say **** the defense in left.

Good news - snit says he will be back

Snit really isn't the problem...he's not the answer...but he's definitely not the problem. The hitting philosophy MUST change in order to sustain success. We need hitters...not power hitters with a few guys that can run into one here and there.

I keep thinking back to the preseason when they traded for Sale, and all of you were rightly saying that he is obviously acquired for the postseason, that his innings would be managed so as not to wear him down before then. And of course that didn't happen, and Sale was predictably absent come postseason time.

We had to many guys that needed to be babied. Lopez was turned into a starter after being a reliever and SS was coming off injury and pitched way more than he ever has. It should be better next year with those 2 being more ready for their roles. Sale had an amazing season and helped us get here but got hurt at the worse possible time. Same ol Sale.

Soler for Sonny Gray needs to happen, imo. Makes a lot of sense for both teams. Cards free cap room but get a solid hitter in return. Braves add a quality starter without adding much to payroll/luxury tax.

Fried and AJSS gave up 8 of the 9 runs allowed in this series. Pen covered 12.2 and gave up 1 run. Pen game in game 1 was the move

We scored a whopping zero runs in the 1st game. So we would have drained our pen who were working on no rest and then been SOL when Fried **** the bed tonight.

I am fairly confident he's here to stay. I think you'll see Soler in LF and Ronnie in RF. They may have to rest Acuna more than he or they would like. But they badly need Soler's offense. Soler' defense is bad, don't get me wrong, but he may be slightly better if he has a full offseason to prepare to be an OF. He was put there after the trade with very little experience this season. Reps are important.

Injuries have left us with some significant holes that should resolve themselves once everyone's healthy. However, I think our focus this offseason needs to be on acquiring a solid starter and finding a replacement for Arcia. Bringing Fried back or trading for Crochet would be ideal, though I'm not sure how likely either option is. Adames would be incredible for SS, but I have a feeling he's already a Dodger.

The first call I would make is to Seattle for JP Crawford. He was a victim of some bad luck, as his rate stats are virtually identical to a year ago, but his BABIP of .248 was by far a career low. He is still an elite defender and produced 2.7bWAR this year. Seattle seems likely to cut payroll and they have a Top SS prospect who could take over. They could also be a player for Ha-Seong Kim as a cheaper alternative to Crawford.

And while we're talking about Crawford, I would check on the availability of some of their SPs. They have 4 guys that are at least No.3 caliber SPs. And they also have Castillo whom they will undoubtedly try to offload. But they would need to eat about half of his remaining salary for anyone to realistically take a gamble on him.

And as I have said, I would try to make a Sonny Gray for Jorge Soler deal work out. It makes a lot of sense for both teams, imo.

The list of positions AA needs to improve has become staggering compared to where we were a year ago. LF, SS and C are obviously the biggest needs. Soler‘s contract has to be moved away somehow. I don’t know where some of you get the idea that you can hide him in LF. Have you watched him play defense? The words have yet to be invented to adequately describe this atrocity. In numbers: -10 fielding runs in just the few weeks. He’s been replacement level overall despite decent offense.

Also, Albies‘ offensive production is directly correlated to how many times he guesses the right pitch. He has no concept of the strike zone, and I have no hope that he’s able to learn. He is easily exploitable by any competent team. May be as good a time as any to sell high on him.

Then there’s Acuna, and the uncertainty of him playing on two surgically repaired knees. He will DH some for sure, but what kind of production can we expect from him?

On the pitching side, we need to replace (likely) Fried and Morton, and contingencies are needed for Strider and Sale (assuming Strider is actually able to return at the start of the season). We need SS to pitch at least 150 quality innings and one of the other young guys to step up, because acquiring all that pitching seems quite far-fetched.

I do not want to be in AA‘s shoes right now. That all feels like too much to ask for one - ir even two - offseasons. I can‘t shake the feeling that this is a watershed moment for the Braves, and we may be looking at a couple of lean years ahead.
