The list of positions AA needs to improve has become staggering compared to where we were a year ago. LF, SS and C are obviously the biggest needs. Soler‘s contract has to be moved away somehow. I don’t know where some of you get the idea that you can hide him in LF. Have you watched him play defense? The words have yet to be invented to adequately describe this atrocity. In numbers: -10 fielding runs in just the few weeks. He’s been replacement level overall despite decent offense.
Also, Albies‘ offensive production is directly correlated to how many times he guesses the right pitch. He has no concept of the strike zone, and I have no hope that he’s able to learn. He is easily exploitable by any competent team. May be as good a time as any to sell high on him.
Then there’s Acuna, and the uncertainty of him playing on two surgically repaired knees. He will DH some for sure, but what kind of production can we expect from him?
On the pitching side, we need to replace (likely) Fried and Morton, and contingencies are needed for Strider and Sale (assuming Strider is actually able to return at the start of the season). We need SS to pitch at least 150 quality innings and one of the other young guys to step up, because acquiring all that pitching seems quite far-fetched.
I do not want to be in AA‘s shoes right now. That all feels like too much to ask for one - ir even two - offseasons. I can‘t shake the feeling that this is a watershed moment for the Braves, and we may be looking at a couple of lean years ahead.
