Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

I don't know that that will work out for Soto. Several teams will just move on. I could see him take a big contract with an opt out after 1 year if he holds out that long. I would love to see Borass's book he made for Soto. This is an agent who said Oliver Perez compared favorably to Johan Santana. He must be telling teams Ian Soto is so good that if he died he would redirect himself quicker than Jesus.

There are only two realistic destinations for Soto, which are the Yankees and Mets. Soto has stated a desire to play for a winning organization, effectively said he prefers to play on the east coast, and his salary demands eliminate most other options.

Boras has overplayed his hand at least once the last several off-seasons and forced a client take a terrible deal. It’s not hard to imagine him doing it with Soto. Boras can do it because he doesn’t care if any particular client gets a terrible deal as long as the strategy fills his own pocket a little more. His clients just have to hope they aren’t the one who gets screwed in any particular offseason

While Soto is good I would take Ohtani over him all day. Ohtani got the deal he did bc of the pitching and hitting and the Japanese market that follows him. Soto only has one of those 3 things. He won’t get an Ohtani type of deal and that’s what will screw Boras in the end waiting it out.

I think Boras knows Soto wont get what Ohtani did. But given Soto's age, he just turned 26. Dont think it's hard to see him get 550-600M's. Boras does overplay his hand sometimes, so we'll see.

I would do 12/550 for Soto. They don’t want deferrals either.

What an exciting first week of free agency.

When can MLB have most of their top free agents sign within a 72 hour period like the NBA does?

Also the back end of deals usually suck unless you sign them early until they are 30. I know we won’t sign him but he no doubt gets that type of deal.

Not really. You are getting the prime years of one of the best hitters ever. Imagine getting to sign Pujols to a 12 year contract after his 25 year old season. You do it.

Soto is not a speed guy, so that won't be an issue as he ages unless he gains 50 pounds and becomes super-slow. His value is in his bat and given his disciplined hitting profile, it looks to have staying power for at least a decade (unless, again, he somehow lets himself go physically). He'll move to DH halfway through his contract so defense won't matter. All these contracts are outlandish these days (especially in terms of length) so I won't be surprised at either AAV or length, but I'd give him a 10-year deal with between 40 MM and 50 MM AAV.

Nope. One of the best eyes ever at the plate ages well. Bonds may have been roided out but that didn’t help his pitch recognition at all. Soto can flat out hit and is the complete opposite of what we have and exactly what we need.

Doesn’t bonds have an insane walk rate. I remember him as having great discipline
