Second ('Third') Trump Presidency Thread

As a happily married 35 year old, I'm glad the poster pushing family values on this board will defend my right to pay a 17 year old high schooler to have sex with me

Hey man - Just because we would never do it doesn't mean someone is a bad person for doing so and we should scarlet letter them when they could dramatically help fix the country.

I think you've made clear that the action is perfectly defensive regardless who is doing it. Thinking otherwise makes us a chior boy

We’ve come a long way from last week’s “I won’t gamble because it’s naughty!”

I don't disparage you for gambling - Did I?

I just don't engage in the activty. I also wouldn't preclude you from holding office because you gamble.

Of course its political. These people still dont' get what time we are living in. Gaetz to his own detriment did not make many friends on capitol hill.

But again - If there was ANY TRUTH to these rumors the Biden DOJ pigs would have charged him and thrown him in jail. He was a big time threat to them.

1) Gaetz was never, ever a threat to the Biden DOJ. Just because he’s controversial and famous relative to the rest of Congress doesn’t mean he’s more important. That seems to be a big MAGA talking point, but I’ve never understood it. Some guy being a loud dick doesn’t make him a target that needs to be handled. Gaetz as a member of Congress was just a sideshow.

2) This isn’t how this works, at least not when the target is rich and powerful and has a good legal team. You can choose to prosecute certain types of offenses you otherwise wouldn’t or use some very flowery legal arguments, but Gaetz’ lawyers wouldn’t just let them cook up evidence. So saying because he didn’t get indicted by the Biden DOJ doesn’t mean he didn’t do anything wrong. It *could* mean that, but all it really proves is they didn’t have sufficient enough evidence to charge him with a crime.

Whats the percentage in your mind?

Maybe you're too much of a choir boy to understand how widespread drug use is.

It's not my mind. You can look up the information if you like. Google is free.

But since you asked, statistics show that roughly 25% of people that use illegal drugs are addicts.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to be skeptical of basically anything the government does, but Gaetz resigning from Congress two days before the vote on its potential release over his obviously spurious chances at being confirmed for AG is every bit as curious, is it not? There is absolutely no expectation that a member of Congress steps down this early in the process, and from what I’ve read his seat cannot be filled by the start of the next session, so there was no other reason to do so that quickly.

And even if it *is* politically motivated for them to release the findings, it doesn’t mean anything about the report itself. Republicans could (and I’d argue probably should) genuinely just think it’s good politics to not let someone with these allegations be quietly snuck into the office of Attorney General.

No, because even if I was innocent I would try to get the investigation canned any way that I can.

Credit where it’s due: having the incoming President give you a convenient political out by nominating you for Attorney General is certainly one of the most creative ways he could have done that.

To stop the investigation.

But do you think if Trump and Gaetz stick with this nomination and have the Senate do a confirmation hearing that the House won’t just hand over what they have to the Senate? Would it change your mind on Gaetz if he drops out of the AG nomination before a hearing?

And I believe he can take his seat again in Jan since he was elected, after he fails to get confirmed

Re: Gaetz seems to me we could nominate someone much more effective at the job AND someone we don't have to worry about being taken out on ethics and pedo charges

Agreed. It’s Trump’s prerogative to spend his political capital how he wants, but this feels wasteful.

That would make it a leak and therefore political.

On the other hand, resigning from your elected position to stop the results from an investigation being made public is also political.

Adds smoke to fire, to me

No, if I'm innocent I still want the investigation to go away.

This isn't Matlock where you want to go and prove your innocence. That's stupid because you could be innocent and still get hit with an ethics charge.
