Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

Pittsburgh newspaper’s Pirates beat writer:

The Post-Gazette learned Monday the Pirates were open to the idea of trading Mitch Keller. A day later, a league source said Jared Jones was also “very available.”

Keller is a decent pitcher. but nothing to write home about. If he wasn't locked in to 4 more years I might be willing to pull the trigger here and hope we can "fix" him like the Pads fixed Musgrove, the Astros fixed Cole, and the Rays fixed Glasnow.

Again, we've never had an issue with this before, why would it be any different now? TDA, Suzuki, Flowers, etc. Even as far back as Mac and Gattis. Success with all of them in roles where they basically split playing time.

Bill would have easily taken over the primary role from TDA in 2023 considering how mediocre TDA's 2023 season went.

I don’t believe that with Snit here and I think that’s why AA let him go.

Why? Seems stupid to me.

I'm wondering if Flaherty could be the one who doesn't have a natural landing spot that falls into our lap. Really not much smoke about him at all out there. The Giants seemed like a natural fit, but if they sign Burnes as rumored, he doesn't have an obvious landing spot. No QO to deal with either, he would make some sense. Kiley McDaniel's projections have been pretty spot on and he has 5/115 for Flaherty. I don't think we do that, but maybe it would go down as those potential landing spots keep drying up.

His contract is pretty ugly for a guy that is at best a decent MOR pitcher. They do well to move on if they find a sucker.

Think their clock is ticking with the two young arms they’ve got. Once you trade Keller then you’ve got to figure out how to replace him.

Maybe they have they ready.

There is enough decent pitching on the market to find a 4ish ERA pitcher on a 1-2 year deal. They could probably land Quintana for half the overall cost of Keller and get equal or better results.

Isn’t Flaherty really not liked?

15 m for around 2.5 WAR seems reasonable to me. Think his stuff is good. Watched a bunch last year because of fantasy. Inconsistent sure but for 15m a year what are you expecting?

And the deal expires in 28 when he’s 32 so it’s all his prime years. I’d be interested in the price point if I were AA.

It's not the price per year that is necessarily troublesome. It's that he's guaranteed 4 more years with escalating salaries. It is unlikely Keller would get 4/72 if he were a FA right now.

28 year old with good stuff that has averaged about 2.3 war a season for last three years? Personally I’d disagree with that but I wouldn’t expect him to get much higher than that either.

Again he's been slightly better than average. And his contract is at the top of the market for a what a guy like him would go for. I would be surprised if the Pirates found a suitor that would take on his entire contract, unless it's the A's, who have to spend money.

Look at what Severino just got this year for example.

That's a good point. Although it should be understood the A's are being forced to spend money and likely had to overspend to get him to come there.

Even still, that would mean Keller's contract is at the top end of his market. That's a decent sized risk for a club like Pitt who has a limited payroll. Again, they could likely get Quintana on a 1-2 year deal and get similar or better production.

I get your argument but I think a solid middle of rotation starter had a ton of value. Seems to me that Kellers deal, coupled with his age, fits nicely into that role.

I’d inquire and see if Pitts just wants to be cheap and shed the salary.

In the end, the Braves don’t need a high-end starter. They have the reigning Cy Young winner, the 2024 Cy Young favorite, and the 2024 ERA leader (with just a few more innings to qualify). Add to that a pitcher who posted an ERA around 2.50 in the second half of the season. Of course, there’s always some variance, but Keller is exactly the type of pitcher the Braves should be targeting.

Depending on how much they would be willing to eat, he could be a decent gamble. Talented pitchers that leave Pitt have a tendency to ball out for other clubs.

I think our club could squeeze a little more top end outta Keller IMO.

Put Cy's mom on the job.
