Soroka to the Nationals, one-year, $9M. That's steep for Soroka lol

It is definitely a lot, but apparently he was pretty popular on the market. After transitioning to a relief role with the ChiSox last year , he was absolutely dominant. A bit of a small sample size with only 36 innings, but given he was a top tier starter before his injury issues, there's plenty of reason to believe he could be a dominant reliever.

Nats said they are signing him as a starter

Not sure why we didn’t take a flier on him to replace JJ.

I would have loved to grab Soroka for 9 million. He could have been a bridge guy in the pen instead of a starter. I don't know if his stuff equates to 5 innings. But as a 1 time through guy who can just ball out for 3 innings.. I think he could be elite in that role.

however, the Braves don't have a mind who could even begin to understand how to deploy a legit multi inning reliver like that.

Is there any reason to think Arraez can capably play left field? He's played 48 games there in his career, none since he was in his early 20's in Minnesota. Isn't he painfully slow?

Being old, I remember the game was populated with guys like Arraez back in the 1960s. He's very unathletic, but puts the ball in play and in an earlier era, that skill was valued far more than today. Twins moved him around (2B, 3B, 1B, LF) just to get his bat in the line-up and while he wasn't terrible on defense, he wasn't steady enough in the field to land at one position and maintain his spot. As for his offense, if you look at his isoOBP, it's not that good. It takes a certain kind of skill (or lack thereof) to hit .354 and have an OBP of less than .400.

Of the remaing options I think In prefer Teoscar Hernandez on a 3 year deal. One interesting note I read on him is his defense was significantly better when plying RF vs LF where he rarely played before recently. So that may be an issue for us. I dont think many want to move Acuna's arm out of RF to accommodate Hernandez.

AA has been way too quiet. By now he’s usually always made a big trade it feels like. He has to be up to something.

Hard to say because guys don’t typically add 4 mph of average exit velocity in their 30s. The fact he did it for an entire season suggests it could be real. It’s not like his numbers were propped up by a .380 BABIP or an inflated HR/FB ratio. He legitimately hit the ball significantly harder in 2024.

Juice.
