Second ('Third') Trump Presidency Thread

There may be a small number that are not fake. But the demand side is this country's unique contribution to the problem. I think both the supply and demand side need sustained efforts from our policymakers. I'm not optimistic. It is a hard problem. And it is easier to demonize people over it rather than address the substantial issues involved.

The vast majority of fentanyl deaths come from fake prescription pills.

What’s going to be absolutely outrageous is the public funding that would go into killing Cartel leaders with the hope that drug addicts don’t discover *other* ways of obtaining drugs. Imagine how well we could fund an expansive drug treatment program with the money that will go toward a literal war on drugs.

Also, given that you cannot stop *all* drugs, doesn’t focusing on supply without addressing demand just encourage more desperate behavior to pay the increased price of the remaining supply of drugs?

It is a classical result in micro that if the demand is inelastic then a drop in supply will cause an increase in spending by addicts.

Speaking of drugs, I’m cackling that if left to his own devices, Trump would have hand-selected a guy to run the justice department having offering Molly and sex to teens while making the war on cartels a priority.

Hopefully they don’t spend enough to make doctors into even bigger opiate dealers. I’d hate to see their families get shot by the army because they wrote a bunch of fraudulent scripts or something.

You're underestimating how much of all this is performative. He never intended for Gaetz to be AG. It was a cheap way to own the libs for a few news cycles. And the war on drugs is mostly performative as well. Panama ditto. Greenland ditto. Mass deportations ditto. Tariffs maybe he'll do. He's kind of boxed himself in on that one since he has the authority to enact them without Congressional approval.

It's gonna be hilarious watching the upcoming effort on the debt ceiling.

No, I called it out at the time thethe was still doing a victory lap about his confirmation chances. He just gave his buddy a golden parachute out of Congress.

Ok so he's selling meme coins, perfume, books, shoes, guitars... what am I missing?

It would be embarrassing for him but it's far more humiliating that there is a large enough market for him to sell to

Prayers for Matt Gaetz

I laughed, but “the death penalty immediately” is either a lie or an authoritarian overreach disguised as protecting kids. The US Border Patrol cannot be made judge, jury and executioner. And we have a lot of laws in place for good reasons to protect from allowing the death sentence being anything but a methodical affair.

This video is like 2 years old.

As much as wish Trump was the monster the media portrays... he's a teddy bear. Pedophiles need not stress

Okay, but that’s a clip of Trump’s own words posted today (on Christmas Eve lol) by one of the people you describe as a Trump cultist without any context. Again, what’s being advocated for here is illegal, and you yourself know it’s a lie. But the people who don’t trust the “fake news” will be talking about Trump’s plan to save us from human traffickers by executing people immediately, and claiming anybody who opposes it just wants to continue human trafficking. You can see for yourself in the comments.

Also, expediting the immigration court process by simply having more courtrooms and personnel available to process claims would solve far more issues than expediting the death penalty process.

Uh oh. Even crazy Loomer is getting concerned at all the leftists filling the administration!

This sounds an awful lot like identity politics. I don’t see anything regarding immigration policy in the title of his role. If he’s good at building AI policy why would there be any concern with his personal views? I thought the goal was to get rid of such considerations and just go off of merit?

And I would like to add my Merry Christmas to y'all!

From Laura's tweet: How will be control immigration in our country and promote America First innovation when Trump appointed this guy who wants to REMOVE all restrictions on green card caps in the United States so that foreign students (which makes up 78% of the employees in Silicon Valley) can come to the US and take jobs that should be given to American STEM students.

My answer: America is great in large part because of these talented immigrants who are leading the way in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. The question she and others should be asking is why children of native-born Americans can't make the cut in STEM fields (and other fields).

I post once again an interesting article discussing the backgrounds of the co-authors of what is probably the most important scientific paper ("Attention is All You Need") of our time. We should be grateful that they and their parents came to this country.

The written article requires a subscription. But the audio version is available to anyone. I highly recommend it. It is a great story.
