Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

My guess is the braves have an offer for the Japanese pitcher on the table. They're hoping to get him or trade for cease if the padres get him.

that guy is going to the Dodger$.. Braves are not even in the running. it is off international money anyway, so I am sure the Dodger$ already cut a hand shake deal so he would post 2 years early so they could get him without getting the tax hit... His interpreter is making 25 million a year all of a sudden.

I think we see something this week. The holidays are officially over for everybody now so I think AA gets something big done.

He's a Dodger or Padres. That's very likely it. Cease is an option, but I doubt they part with him outside of a large package we wouldn't comfortable giving a Boras client on a one-year deal.

I am just excited about all the 'almost' trades and signings we have heard about already and will hear about in the weeks to come.. just need those costs to get back down to '98 prices and then AA will go ape **** crazy...

It certainly feels like the rest of the offseason is being held up by the Sasaki deal. Once we see a few trades for international money happen we will probably see the rest of the FAs sign.

Bowman said this morning that the Braves and Charlie's team spoke this offseason, but they never made a real attempt to re-sign him. Interesting.

not sure why he would be holding anything up. everyone with a few ounces of common sense knows where he will be.. He also will have to sign a minor league contract, so he can't set any kind of price threshold. I mean I guess other teams can look at what the Dodger$ pay his interpreter...

Agree.

The Dodgers probably have a dynasty.

They have 5 guys who can be a number 1: Sasaki, Yamamoto, Snell, Glasnow, Ohtani

They have 3 all-timers at the top of their lineup.

The Braves had a chance to compete with the Acuna and Albies low ball contracts, but injuries and cash constraints have likely pissed it away.

From the Braves perspective, perhaps they are waiting to see if SD gets him which might make Cease available. Perhaps AA's first choice is Cease, and if he isn't available he pivots to Flaherty or Monty. Maybe the Jays will blow it up and trade Bichette if they don't get Sasaki, and AA wants to make sure he has the ammo to get him.

Who knows...it's pure speculation at this point. There's no other FA impactful enough to be holding up the last bit of the market though.

Cease is a second tier option and it would take at least Baldwin to get him.

Flaherty and Monty are third tier options.

No matter how you slice it, this off-season has sucked major donkey nuts.

The Braves have clearly gotten worse.

DOB says Braves have Scott’s medicals so that’s probably where Ryan got the info correct but potentially jumped to a conclusion too quickly.

Medicals are typically reviewed after a deal contingent on those medicals looking good is reached, so it's logical to assume the signing was imminent.

You mentioned international pool money earlier. Perhaps some of the return for cease would involve that.

I have a feeling the Dodger$ are betting on the new CBA bailing them out on the deferments.. like the lux tax will be completely revamped or eliminated.. MLB is the only sports that has this type of system to drive for parity. It is completely ineffective since a few teams control their own regional networks that make them billions. Sure owners are greedy POS that won't spend a dime of their money, but most business don't.. they re-invest what the asset makes. So teams like the Stankees and Dodger$ are light years ahead of other teams because of TV deals...

So I think something is going to happen on the the new CBA that will, of course, bail the Dodger$ out of these deferments.

I see it like Emcheff that something seems to be holding him up. They may be in deep with Sasaki and think they have a legit chance. I’m sure they’ve already met with him but AA lets nothing leak so we don’t know. If SD does get him then they would be more inclined to trade Cease and we already know that AA wanted him last year before getting Sale. A Scott, Cease, Ramon/Profar offseason wouldn’t be bad at all.
