Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

Mass Live’s Sean McAdam reported that Tanner Scott could earn as much as $20 million per season on his new contract.
McAdam mentioned that it’s “a crowded market for Tanner Scott,” who will set the relief pitcher market when he finally does sign with a team. Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo also reported that there are “likely multiple big-market bidders” who could meet Scott’s asking price. Edwin Diaz currently has the most expensive contract for a relief pitcher in terms of AAV (Average Annual value), coming in at $20.4 million. It sounds like Tanner Scott might have a chance to match that or perhaps leapfrog Josh Hader with the second-largest relief pitcher contract in baseball.

Great, now AA won't sign relievers either

The Braves won't either.. but another team that wants to make the playoffs will. Either pony up or go sit at the kiddie table.

If you’re needing a closer then yeah but we have Iglesias who was elite last year so we just need a set up man. That’s an expensive set up man.

why is there a role associated with him.. are you saying the outs he gets in the 8th or 7th or whenever are not just as important as the outs Iggy gets in the 9th.. Pay for talent, not roles...

The easy solution is to backload his contract. He gets "closer" money when he replaces Iggy in 2026.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the Royals are re-signing Michael Lorenzen to a one-year, $7 million contract.
Passan adds that the deal also includes a $12 million mutual option for 2026.

I’m not paying a set up man more than I am my closer. Most teams don’t either. Not unless the closer is a rookie making league minimum.

Who is the Dodger$ closer?

Phillips? I guess since he had the most. But they had 5 guys with 5 or more saves. They had10 guys with at least one save. The Braves had 4 guys with any saves. The save stat is such a trap stat that makes guys like twit unwatchable. To say the game is only saved in the 9th inning is so dumb. It is like judging a guy for the number of RBI’s he has.

If it takes20 million to get talent then the Braves better pay it or watch other teams that will.

I agree that if you wanna compete at the top that AA will have to bite the bullet and spend on a FA at some point. There will be 3 that I think he is saving some powder for 1 or 2 next year. Bichette, Tucker, and Cease will all be FA and all 3 will be a need. Ozuna and Iglesias will both be FA so the money should be there to get Cease and 1 of the others possibly if he wanted.

Any team that wants to win 100 games needs 2 closers really. There were several times last year we needed someone to close and Iggy had pitched too much recently. We lost several of those games. I think you can also view it as filling a hole on next years team with Iglesias being a pending free agent. Now I would pay more than 4 years 60 million. I keep saying it but we need to develop a cheap closer in house. Waldrep could be that guy. I know people hate converting starters to relievers but if it's saving us 15:million a year I think it's worth it.

I have a feeling the Dodger$ are betting on the new CBA bailing them out on the deferments.. like the lux tax will be completely revamped or eliminated.. MLB is the only sports that has this type of system to drive for parity. It is completely ineffective since a few teams control their own regional networks that make them billions. Sure owners are greedy POS that won't spend a dime of their money, but most business don't.. they re-invest what the asset makes. So teams like the Stankees and Dodger$ are light years ahead of other teams because of TV deals...

So I think something is going to happen on the the new CBA that will, of course, bail the Dodger$ out of these deferments.

A lot of MLB teams (and sports teams in general) don't make much, if any, money. But that's not really the reason you buy a team. You buy a sports franchise for status, tax benefits, and because sports franchises typically increase exponentially in value. The Phoenix Suns were bought for $401 million back in 2004, then sold in 2023 for $4 billion. I don't know of any other investment that is virtually guaranteed to net you 5-10x your money in 20 years.
