Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

Ohtani wasn't even an ace starter before TJ.

Health is a concern for both rotations. But the Braves have the 2 best starters of the group in Strider and Sale.

I don't know if I agree with Show-hey not being an ace.. his last healthy season was incredible.. 200+ K in like 160 innings or something.. had a low 2 FiP... It was also after a pretty good 2021 season as well. Now how he or even Strider looks this year is yet to be determined. Just hope both can come back and be close to what they were... good for the game imo..

Ohtani-Yamamoto-Snell-Glasnow-Sasaki is literally 5 aces in their prime if they're healthy.

Sale-Strider-Cease-Lopez-Schwellenbach is very good but I think we'd need the offensive edge.

Not one of them is a legitimate ace. Yamamato is the closest and he has a grand total of 90 major innings. Are we declaring Schwelly an ace now too?

He was healthy most of 2023 until his arm gave out. 4 FIP. Ohtani is a good pitcher but he's not in the same class as Strider, Sale or any other dominant sub 3 FIP starter.

I never judge a pitcher within an injury season.. you just don't know when the pain started.. what changes he did to relieve some discomfort or which teams he (i mean his interpreter) was betting on at the time... I just don't think it is fair to judge any pitcher for the season they went down with a serious injury.

Blake Snell has 2 Cy Youngs.

Glasnow has a sub-3 FIP 5 of the past 6 years.

Ohtani may well be the GOAT overall player and has a career FIP of 3.3.

You are sounding like a homer.

I think you could say Tyler and Show-hey are aces if healthy.. both have the arsenals and command to be that. But both come in with huge health risk.

And I could agree, staying healthy is a big part of being considered an ace.. That said, game 1 of the WS.. you couldn't go wrong with starting Show-hey or Tyler..

That is a good ranking.. Leave Saki out.. rank your game 1 starter for opening day if you had all 9 of those pitchers in their current condition... assuming Strider and Show-hey are ready..

I need to think about it.

Edit.. leave Cease out of it too.. he is a Friar still..

In 9 seasons, Snell has exactly 2 seasons with a bWAR over 2.2. His FIP in 2023 Cy Young season was over a full run higher than his ERA. No, that is not a legitimate ace. Does he have the ability to pitch like an ace? Sure. But he rarely pitches that way. And he's injury prone.

Glasnow is a walking injury that hasn't thrown more than 134 innings in any season of his career and had an elbow strain that ended his 2024 season.

Ohtani is coming off his 2nd TJS at age 30.

Ok.. I think I go

Show-hey
Sale
Strider
Tyler
Lopez
Snell
Schwelly
Yomo
Saki

I think I could flip Schwelly, Lopez and Snell around 3 times and not be upset about it..

The Dodgers have huge upside, but Yama has little MLB experience and Roki has none, and not to forget the injury concerns are beyond real. They have a chance to be all-time, but folks need to simmer down.

Someone was clearly not old enough to have watched a rotation in the 90’s that consisted of an inner-circle hall of famer, two first ballot hall of famers and the various number 3s that made up the 4 and 5 spots in said rotation, all in their prime, for a decade.

this.. Maddux is the goat imo.. then Smoltz and Glav.. you just knew it was a win when those three took the hill..

Yup. The 97 and 98 Braves rotations are goated. Prime Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz combined with a very good Neagle and solid Millwood who would have been a good #3 on most rotations in the league.

Andy Martino: The Mets have pivoted to plan B, post-Alonso. They now consider it the most likely outcome that Alonso will sign elsewhere. They add Winker and will add a reliever, possibly a top one.

Dammit. Scott is easily a Met. Lol

The great Bob Uecker passed away today. Legend.

I have several Bob Uecker cards somewhere in an attic in the house I grew up in. Here's one I own (probably not in as good a shape as this one).
