Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

I actually want to preface this by saying I don’t actually have a problem with this, even if it is illegal, but is Elon Musk’s petition lottery thing actually legal? It feels like one of those things that would be so stupid to do so brazenly if it were illegal, but it also feels like it totally is illegal? I understand the idea would be that:

1) He’s not offering a prize for registering to vote, just restricting participation by it.

2) The petition is technically broad enough to cover different political affiliations

But when taken in the context of the promotion of the lottery and the connotation of the messaging and its outsized appeal to conservative voters, does Elon’s plan actually manage to thread the needle properly?

Again, for what it’s worth, I welcome any attempt to register unregistered voters and I’m all for millions moving from rich people to (hopefully) not rich people. So even if it is illegal, I think it performs a societal good, even if I take a cynical view of the motivations behind it. Most campaign finance violations come from rich people buying influence by giving it to other rich people, so count me in for violations that make it to the working class. Plus y’all can even have more republican voters if you’re going to distribute the wealth for us.

He's not paying for vote registrations. He's paying for support for a PAC to get voter registrations. Its a loophole. Both parties do it

This tracks with how I guessed it would work, but is there not significant liability there if it’s established what their goal and methodology is? It seems like one of those things that you would have to work really, really hard to not say the quiet part out loud if you’re going to offer a million dollars a day as a prize.

I dont know that its illegal but why would they care about legality when Republicans are going to set the precedent of pardoning themselves for cheating in elections. The standard will be cheat as much as you can and pardon yourself if you win. Thats the recipe for a constitutional crisis.

It’s a daily mail article

I mean Biden would have just met with the heads of all SM and had all voices censored and banished

Let’s not act like this is a big deal

Meta hiring Dana white for the board and announcing a new moderatorless program, adding community notes .

Credit where it’s due, I like the Community Notes feature and it might still be underutilized. Laughing at the people thinking Zuck being “based” now matters. There’s a whole-ass movie dedicated to how he’s a manipulative little weirdo who can’t be trusted, and it was made by Hollywood when he was still “woke” or whatever.

Welcome back, President Cancel Culture! Any free speech absolutists want to explain why Comcast should be held accountable for Seth Meyers using his free speech to say mean things about Trump?

As usual... the thing you're worried about trump "maybe" doing did not bother you Joe Biden "actually" did it.

I'm also not naive enough to think trunp is a free speech advocate

Tut tut, I was informed very reliably that it’s automatically coercive and a direct violation of the 1st Amendment for the government to make such requests, so this isn’t a maybe thing.
