Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

One of those three feels pretty important to us. I did hear AA say the other day that there’s still a chance Jimenez comes back at the All Star break, but we need another high leverage righty.

I think everyone has been pretty aligned that Joe isn't coming back this season, ans if he does it'll be with like a month to go. However, if that has changed over the last couple of weeks, that could certainly change Alex's approach. But he probably just used that as fodder to not sound desperate.

We'd be silly to bank on Jimenez coming back and just lighting it up right away - just like we'd be silly to count on Hernandez finally sticking. Another proven high-end bullpen arm is a must.

Kim to the Rays, 2/29, opt out after year 1. Passan said he should be ready by around May. I would have done that but Arcia is probably fine in the 9 spot.

IF we aren't resetting the luxury tax, this was a missed opportunity for AA.

If we are resetting the luxury tax, than this move was never an option for us.

I think at this point we have to assume he is trying to reset the tax. Doing so would open up next year to even bigger spending and I feel most 'needle movers' are already off this year. So just add around the fringes and leave some bullets to see what the team needs at the deadline and go big next year.

I disagree. I think we're looking for a SP and there's a couple of potential difference makers on the board. A SP would also allow us to push Holmes down to the bullpen which would be a big upgrade

I don't think resetting means a big deal to them because they don't plan on going far enough over the luxury cap that it will cost a lot of extra money. And even if they di manage to reset the penalties don't expect it to be because they plan to spend big next year. The FA market is just crazy.

Just like it was impossible to imagine AA going into the season with no LFer, it is impossible to imagine him going into the season with a rotation of Sale/Schwelly/Lopez/Holmes/AAAAnderson.

Almost any healthy MLB SP is better than AAAAnderson and the rest of the AAAA contingent of arms, and it's no guarantee all 3 of Sale/Schwelly/Lopez make it to opening day healthy. Anyone banking on a healthy Sale and a healthy Strider is a complete fool.

AA needs a SP, and he will get one...just like he got a LFer. No competent GM would lose Fried and Morton, and then fail to backfill the rotation with at least 1 arm.

I am not saying AA won't add more. I am saying he is trying to get someone to keep him under the threshold. Unless a Cease deal is just too good to pass up, then he stays under the cap imo.

He has already said he views Holmes as a starter, so I am taking him at his word. Not happy if he is the 5th starter, but it is a pitcher.

It would allow them to go over by 25-50 million without paying that 50% tax on all the overage plus the 45% surcharge. That is a lot of cheese. So I think it would be dumb to go over the tax by just a few million this year and still have that 3 year penalty going into another year. If he was NOT going to reset the tax, then he should have been a player on a lot more than he has gotten.

Bichette should be our offseason target next year so resetting the tax makes sense. SD is the team AA should solve the SP problem. Cease or King would both change the look of the pitching staff as a whole and both will probably cost the same to get. I think King is gonna make 6 million this year and Cease 13.5 so neither is expensive money wise.

Next years class is way worse than this years. Only thing we need is a SS, maybe OF'er if Profar moves to DH to replace Ozuna. And some SP/BP depth.

I still wonder if SD wouldn't have interest in Kelenic with being so thin on OF'ers.

This is something I have been considering. I know teams want prospects in trades, but the Braves have some lesser paid major league players who would be a good fit for a team that wants to be modestly competitive.

A team that is rebuilding could find guys like Kelenic, Anderson, White, and others who would not be interesting to a contender, but might be part of a package for a good player from a team that is not a contender, but doesn’t want to be a bottom feeder in the meantime.

With SD losing money last year and needing to cut some payroll but still remain competitive a Kelenic, Waldrep, Nacho package should do the trick for 1 year of Cease.
