Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

Really don’t think AA and company give a **** about resetting the tax.

I think it's all about threading the needle. CBT payroll is calculated at the end of the year not the beginning. I expect we're not looking at payroll getting in the way of competing but still being able to get back under the tax if we're not having a competitive year.

If things go wrong dumping Iglesias Ozuna at the deadline could cut over 10 mil from the CBT total.

I’d thought at one point it was possible they might move Ozuna in a trade for a starter if they believe enough in Baldwin to where he’d be ready at some point in the season. But yeah if we aren’t contending for whatever reason, both those guys are likely to be traded in July.

I don't think we need another SP if everyone stays relatively healthy. We need a SP to replace the inevitable injury. i do like Holmes as a starter but we need quality RH relievers in the pen.

Kiley McDaniel put out his top 200 prospect rankings. Here are the Braves:

Drake Baldwin 44

Nacho Alvarez 85

AJ Smith-Shawver 128

Luis Guanipa 140

Owen Murphy 142

Cam Caminiti 164

Pretty stunned to see Guanipa on that list but definitely intriguing. All the tools are there, all the production is ... not. One small thought I had is Kiley has always been high on JR Ritchie in the past so a little disappointed not to see him in the top 200. Hopefully just waiting on him to get a full season back from TJ.

In his latest update for The Athletic, Rosenthal says Kenley Jansen is focused on getting 53 more saves to reach 500. He said the Mets were interested before they resigned Stanek but there wasn’t a fit if they wanted Jansen to set up Diaz. So the question for the Braves is would you move Iglesias back to the setup role we started him in if Jansen is the best available relief option?

No Waldrep is also a bit stunning.

He didn’t make Keith Law’s top 115 either after Law was previously pretty high on his fastball/splitter combo giving him a decent floor. Will be interesting to read the team reports when they come out to find out what has caused his stock to drop so drastically after last season.

Yeah, seems odd that Kiley doesn't have Waldrep on his list anywhere when Guanipa, Murphy, and Caminiti are all on the list. Certainly I would put him over Murphy who just had TJS.

Just seems like the bottom has fallen out of Waldrep when we saw the splitter in AAA/MLB.... and saw that it was painfully mediocre... he's been a huge disappointment after so much draft hype.

I think the command is so bad it doesn't matter how good the pitch is, currently.

I dunno... the statcast data suggests it isn't even a good pitch regardless of control... at least thus far. He did have some forearm tightness when he came up so maybe that had something to do with it and he just wasn't completely right the entire year? Guess that's a possibility but I think he's a dud.

He is young, but I am like you and really low on him. He didn't have control in college and hasn't improved that since.

I’m just going off memory here but there was some trouble with tracking it as it had velocity and movement inconsistency (as in it didn’t always move the same way)

When I analyzed Waldrep’s pitch data there didn’t seem to be anything worth getting excited about. The split was very underwhelming. Unless something has dramatically changed, I don’t see how he’s a MLB quality SP.

The worst part about it is the Braves should have had some of that data for him from college, and they still drafted him.

44 seems low for Baldwin. AJSS has always gotten a “meh” from me, so 85 seems reasonable.
